This study explores how the Puritan theologians Richard Sibbes and Richard Baxter influenced John Eliot’s seventeenthcentury mission to Native Americans. Sibbes’s vision of Christ as a “gentle healer” led Eliot to treat natives as fellow sinners needing grace, inspiring Bible translation and the creation of “praying towns.” Baxter, emphasizing visitation, catechism, discipline, and civilization as steps toward conversion, supported Eliot for decades through counsel and resources. Eliot’s mission thus combined Sibbes’s grace-centered theology with Baxter’s practical pastoral guidance, forming a holistic vision of grace, conversion, and communal reform.
