Gwangju and Jeonnam are facing an increasing risk of regional decline due to continuous population decreases, and a megacity development strategy that integrates their living and economic spheres is required to overcome this challenge. This study examines the necessity of establishing a metropolitan transportation network for the formation of a Gwangju–Jeonnam megacity and identifies key tasks based on an analysis of regional travel characteristics. Although a single daily living area has already been established between the two regions, mobility still relies heavily on private automobiles due to the insufficient competitiveness of public transportation. Therefore, this study proposes major improvement strategies to realize 30-minute and 1-hour living spheres within the region, including enhancing public transportation competitiveness, strengthening hub transfer centers, expanding the metropolitan railway network, and establishing an institutional foundation for integrated management. Improving the metropolitan transportation network in Gwangju–Jeonnam is expected to enhance residential conditions, strengthen economic integration, and ultimately provide a foundation for the region to emerge as a new national growth axis that promotes sustainable and balanced development.

광주·전남은 인구감소로 인한 지방소멸 위험이 심화되고 있으며 이를 극복하기 위해서는 생활권 및 경제권을 통합하는 메가시티 추진 전략이 요구된다. 본 연구는 광주·전남 메가시티 조성을 위한 광역교통망 구축의 필요성을 진단하고 통행 특성 분석을 통해 광역교통망을 위한 주요 과제를 도출하였다. 광주·전남은 이미 하나의 생활권이 형성되어 있으나 대중교통 경쟁력 부족으로 승용차 중심 이동이 지속되고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 광주·전남 30분, 1시간 생활권을 달성하기 위해 대중교통 경쟁력 확보, 거점환승허브 강화, 광역철도망 구축, 제도적 기반 마련과 같은 광역교통 망 개선 과제를 제안하였다. 광주·전남의 광역교통망 개선은 지역 정주 여건을 향상시키고 경제권을 통합하여 지속가능 한 균형발전을 이루는 새로운 국가 성장축으로 재편될 수 있는 기반이 될 것으로 기대한다.
