The purpose of this study is to examine the peace education practices of the Hiroshima Peace Museum as a site of cultural memory in Japan and a key medium for peace education. To this end, this paper first examines theoretical discussions related to cultural memory. Second, this paper derives key characteristics of museums based on selective cultural memory and items for analyzing the museum’s peace education based on these characteristics. Third, this study examines the content of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum’s peace education exhibits from the perspective of selective cultural memory. The research findings reveal that the exhibitions at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, as a space of cultural memory and an institution for peace education, employ the following practices: selective alteration of narrative focus, maximization of the pure image and innocence of Japanese victims, selective victim stratification, reinforcement of Japan’s positive image, dilution of responsibility through nuclear universalism, and blurring of perpetrator and victim roles through passive historical narration.

본 연구의 목적은 일본의 문화기억의 장소이자 평화교육의 중요한 매체로서 히로시마 평화 박물관의 평화교육 사례를 고찰하는데 있다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 첫째, 문화기억 관련 이론적 논의를 살펴보고, 둘째 선택적 문화기억 기반 박물관의 주요 특징과 이에 기반하고 있는 박물 관의 평화교육 분석을 위한 항목을 도출하였으며, 셋째, 선택적 문화기억의 관점에서 히로시 마 평화기념관의 평화교육 전시 내용을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 문화기억의 공간이자 평화교육기 관으로서 히로시마 평화박물관의 전시는 서사의 중점의 선택적 변경, 일본의 희생자의 순수한 이미지 및 무고함의 극대화, 선택적 피해계층화, 일본의 긍정적 이미지 강화, 핵보편주의를 통 한 책임의 희석화, 수동적 역사기술을 통한 가해와 피해 모호화가 이루어짐을 도출하였다.
