Objectives: This study explored, from a phenomenological perspective, the adaptation process of university students who experienced special transfer due to school closure. The purpose was to identify the meaning of their experiences and provide foundational data for developing student protection policies and integrated support systems at the institutional level. Methods: Focus group interviews were conducted with 12 special transfer students from universities in the Gyeongnam region, organized in groups of four. The transcribed data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s phenomenological method. Data collection continued until saturation, and ethical approval was obtained from the Institutional Review Board (IRB). Results: Four theme clusters emerged: (1) experiencing shock and a sense of abandonment at the time of closure, (2) moving forward through solidarity and determination, (3) early transfer experiences of both welcome and discrimination, and (4) academic maturity and personal growth amid heavy academic workload. Conclusion: University closures caused confusion, loss, and psychological distress among students. To reduce such impact, it is essential to institutionalize psychological and academic support systems, establish mentoring and adaptation programs, and promote resilience that enables students to sustain learning and growth even in crisis situations.

목적: 본 연구는 대학 폐교로 특별편입을 경험한 대학생의 적응 과정을 현상학적 관점에서 탐색하고, 그 의미를 규명하여 학생 보호ㆍ지원 정책과 대학 차원의 통합 지원체계 마련에 기 초자료를 제공하고자 하였다. 방법: 경상남도 지역 특별편입생 12명을 대상으로 4명 단위 포커스그룹 면담을 실시하고, 녹취ㆍ전사 자료를 Colaizzi 방법으로 분석하였다. 자료는 포화 시점까지 수집하였고, IRB 승 인을 받았다. 결과 분석: 연구 결과 4개 주제모음이 도출되었으며, 첫째, 폐교 당시의 충격과 ‘버려짐’의 체험 둘째, 연대와 의지 속에서의 움직임 셋째, 환영과 차별이 교차하는 편입 초기 경험, 넷째, 과중한 학업 속 학습적 성숙과 자기 성장이었다. 결론: 본 연구에서 폐교는 학생들에게 예기치 못한 혼란과 상실을 초래하며, 향후 유사한 상황의 학생들이 심리적 불안과 학업 단절을 최소화하도록 심리ㆍ학업 통합 지원체계의 제도 화와 맞춤형 멘토링, 통합적 적응 프로그램의 구축이 필요하다. 이러한 지원은 위기 상황에서 도 학생들이 학업과 삶을 지속할 수 있는 회복력의 기반이 될 것이다.
