This study aims to examine the structural transformations that Jeonju Hanji, the traditional Korean handmade paper, has undergone during the processes of modernization, and to analyze how its techniques and transmission systems have been maintained and reconstructed amid these changes. As a comparative case, the research focuses on Japan’s Mino Washi, thereby exploring both the shared East Asian papermaking heritage and the distinct institutional, communal, and industrial strategies each region has developed. Jeonju Hanji has evolved along a dual trajectory: partially embracing mechanization and standardization in response to market fluctuations, while simultaneously preserving artisanal authenticity in the fields of art and conservation. In contrast, Mino Washi has reinforced the stability of its transmission through the integration of communitybased associations, cooperatives, and the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage system, successfully establishing an international brand through collaboration with modern industries and design. Drawing upon classical texts, prior research, and field investigations, this study provides foundational insights that may contribute to the sustainable succession and revitalization of Jeonju Hanji’s traditional craftsmanship.

본 연구는 전주한지가 근·현대화를 거치며 제작과정에서 어떤 구조적 변화를 겪 었는지, 그리고 그 변화 속에서 전승이 어떠한 방식으로 유지·재구성되었는지를 규 명하는 데 목적을 둔다. 비교 대상으로 일본의 미노화지를 선택하여, 두 전통 종이 가 공유하는 동아시아 전통 종이 제작 기술의 공통 기반과, 각 지역이 선택한 제 도·공동체·산업 전략의 차이를 분석하였다. 전주한지는 장인 개인 단위의 미시적 전승과 수요 변동에 민감한 시장 구조 속에서 공정 일부의 기계화·표준화를 수용 하는 동시에, 예술·보존 분야에서 전통성을 고집하는 이중적 경로를 걸어왔다. 반 면 미노화지는 공동체 기반의 보존회와 협동조합, 그리고 유네스코 인류무형문화 유산 제도를 결합해 전승의 안정성을 강화하였으며, 현대 산업 및 디자인과의 연계를 통해 국제적 브랜드를 확립하였다. 이를 위하여 본고는 전주한지와 미노화지 관 련 고문헌, 연구자료, 현지조사 등을 바탕으로 선행연구를 수행하였다. 이러한 연 구 성과는 전주한지의 지속가능한 전승체계를 마련하기 위한 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
