Character education has traditionally focused on moral and civic character, but intellectual and aesthetic character must also be recognized as distinct and essential dimensions of personal character. Intellectual character refers to a disposition toward reflection, inquiry, and the cultivation of thinking habits, while aesthetic character encompasses both a sensibility for discovering and appreciating beauty and meaning, and a capacity for expressive engagement grounded in empathy, imagination, and communication. Character education should not remain confined to morality and citizenship; only when intellectual and aesthetic character are embraced as intrinsic components of its aims can education fulfill its fundamental purpose—nurturing mature, free, and well-rounded human beings.

인성교육은 도덕적·시민적 인성에 집중되어 논의되었으나, 지적·심미 적 인성 역시 고유한 인성의 차원으로 고려되어야 한다. 지적 인성은 성찰과 탐구, 사고의 습관을 기르는 사고 성향이며, 심미적 인성은 아 름다움과 의미를 발견하고 향유하는 심미적 성향과, 공감과 상상력을 바탕으로 자신을 표현하고 타자와 연결되는 표현 성향이 결합된 총체 적 인성이다. 인성교육은 도덕성과 시민성에만 머무르지 않고, 지적·심 미적 인성을 본질적 구성요소로 포함시킬 때 비로소 성숙하고 자유로 운 인간 형성이라는 교육의 근본적 목적에 다다를 수 있다.
