Contemporary makeup design has evolved beyond a simple form of aesthetic expression to become a creative medium that visually conveys art, identity, and emotion. As a result, there has been a growing attempt to apply artistic techniques from fine art to makeup design. In particular, the symbolism and emotional expressiveness found in painting have served as significant sources of inspiration within the field of beauty design. This study aims to explore the possibility of convergence between art and beauty design by analyzing the expressive characteristics in the paintings of Frida Kahlo, a representative Mexican female artist, and applying these features to makeup design. Kahlo’s works construct a unique artistic world that combines physical pain, psychological wounds, female identity, and national symbolism, revealing the inner self through the visual language of emotion. The research was conducted in three stages: literature review, artwork analysis, and design experimentation. First, Kahlo’s artistic world was examined, and representative works were selected for analysis focusing on color, form, and symbolic elements. Based on these findings, the expressive features and formative language identified in her paintings were visualized through makeup design prototypes. The results show that Frida Kahlo’s paintings function as a visual language of inner emotion, and that primary color contrasts, symbolic imagery, and asymmetrical composition can be effectively translated into the formative elements of makeup design. Furthermore, the study suggests that makeup design can be expanded as an artistic medium for visually expressing personal emotion and identity, presenting a direction for the convergence of art and beauty design.

현대의 메이크업 디자인은 단순한 미적 표현을 넘어, 예술과 정체성, 감정을 시각적으로 드러내는 창조적 매 체로 확장되고 있다. 이에 따라 미술 작품의 표현 기법 을 메이크업에 응용하려는 시도가 활발히 이루어지고 있으며, 특히 회화 예술의 상징성과 감정 표현은 뷰티 디자인 영역에서 중요한 영감을 제공하고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 흐름 속에서 멕시코의 대표적 여 성 화가 프리다 칼로(Frida Kahlo)의 회화에 나타난 표현 특성을 분석하고, 이를 메이크업 디자인에 응용함 으로써 예술과 뷰티 디자인의 융합 가능성을 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 프리다 칼로의 작품은 신체적 고 통과 심리적 상처, 여성 정체성과 민족적 상징이 결합 된 독자적인 예술 세계를 구축하였으며, 감정의 시각적 언어를 통해 내면을 드러내는 회화적 미학을 보여준다. 연구는 문헌 연구, 작품 분석, 디자인 실험의 세 단 계로 진행하였다. 먼저 프리다 칼로의 예술 세계를 고 찰하고, 작품들의 색채, 형태, 상징 요소를 중심으로 분 석하였다. 이후 회화에서 도출된 특성과 조형 언어를 메이크업 기법으로 시각화하여 디자인 시안을 제시하였 다. 연구 결과, 프리다 칼로의 회화는 내면의 감정을 시 각화한 표현 언어로써 원색 대비, 상징적 이미지, 비대 칭 구도 등이 메이크업 디자인의 조형 요소로 효과적으 로 전이될 수 있음을 확인하였다. 또한 메이크업 디자 인은 개인의 감정과 정체성을 시각적으로 표현하는 예 술적 매체로 확장될 수 있음을 시사하며, 향후 예술과 뷰티 디자인의 융합적 접근 방향을 제시하였다.
