According to Henri Lefebvre’s The Production of Space, space is not merely a physical backdrop but a social construct shaped by the interplay of representations of space, representational space, and spatial practice. Human growth entails both physical and psychological transformations, ultimately leading to identity formation through engagement with social space. This study analyzes the transformation narrative in Pixar’s Turning Red through the lens of spatial practice. The protagonist, Mei, a 13-year-old Chinese Canadian girl, transforms into a red panda, which symbolizes her struggle between familial expectations and personal desires. In her human form, she conforms to family norms, embodying representations of space, while her transformed state reflects representational space, symbolizing social pressure and internal conflict. By transcending traditional spatial constraints, Mei generates new spaces and achieves self-realization through reconciliation with her family. Applying Lefebvre’s spatial theory, this study examines how the film’s settings and objects articulate representations of space, representational space, and spatial practice, thereby demonstrating how animation employs spatiality to depict adolescent identity formation and personal growth.

앙리 르페브르의 저서 『공간의 생산』에 따르면, 공간은 생산 과정에서 재현 공간, 공간의 재현, 공간적 실천이 상호작용하는 관계를 형성한다. 공간은 단순히 존재하는 물리적 배경이 아니라 다양한 사회적 기능을 지닌다. 모든 인간은 성장 과정을 겪으며, 이 과정에서 시공간 속에서 신체적·심리적 변화를 경험하고 궁극 적으로 자아를 형성하여 사회적 공간 속에서 상호작용한다. 본 연구는 픽사 스튜디오의 애니메이션 <메이의 새빨간 비밀>을 연구 대상으로 삼아, 13세 중국계 캐 나다 소녀인 주인공 메이가 레서판다로 변신하는 과정을 통해 어떠한 공간적 실천과 성장을 이루는지를 탐구한다. 메이는 인간의 모습일 때 어머니와 가족 의식을 따르는 공간의 재현 속에 위치하며, 변신 후에는 억압을 상징하는 재현 공간을 통해 갈등을 경험한다. 이러한 과정을 통해 전통적 공간을 탈피하고 새로운 공간을 생산하며, 어머니와 가족 구성원과의 화해를 통해 자아실현을 이루게 된다. 본 연구는 세 가지 공간 요소를 중심으로 애니메이션 〈메이의 새빨간 비밀〉에 나타난 소품과 장소를 분석하여 변신과 성장의 서사를 규명하고, 작품에 대한 이해를 심화하는 데 그 의의를 둔다.
