This study investigates how mothers’ cultural and artistic experiences in childhood are reconstructed and enacted in their parenting practices during adulthood. Using a narrative inquiry approach within qualitative research, data were collected through in-depth interviews and the researcher’s reflective journals with five mothers who had engaged in diverse cultural-artistic activities. The analysis revealed four main findings. First, childhood cultural-artistic experiences were formed as “scenes of memory” comprising sensory, emotional, and narrative elements, establishing the foundations for adult identity and parenting philosophy. Second, these early experiences continued into cultural appreciation and parenting practices, demonstrating the intergenerational transmission of embodied cultural capital as conceptualized by Bourdieu. Third, culture and the arts evolved into a parenting language that supported children’s autonomy, self-determination, and emotional expression, beginning from their individual interests. Fourth, cultural-artistic experiences served as relational mediators that facilitated dialogue, empathy, and reflection between parents and children, shaping the emotional and communicative structure of the family. This study highlights cultural-artistic experiences as a lifelong resource influencing parenting and family relationships, and suggests the importance of integrating parents’ cultural-artistic backgrounds into the design of family-centered arts education programs.

본 연구는 어머니들이 어린 시절 경험한 문화예술 활동이 성인기에 어떻게 재구성되어 자녀 양육 실천으로 이어지는지를 탐색하였다. 질적 연구 중 내러티브 탐구 방법을 적용하여, 다양한 문화예술 경험을 지닌 어머니 5명을 대상으로 심층면담 및 연구자의 성찰기록을 수집·분석하였다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 유년기의 문화예술 경 험은 감각·정서·이야기가 결합된 ‘기억의 장면들’로 형성되어 성인기의 정체성과 양육 철학의 근간이 되 었다. 둘째, 이러한 경험은 문화예술 향유와 양육 행동으로 지속되며 Bourdieu가 설명한 체화된 문화자본의 세 대 간 전승 구조를 드러냈다. 셋째, 문화예술은 자녀의 흥미에서 출발하는 자율성·자기결정권·감정 표현을 촉진하는 양육의 언어로 확장되었다. 넷째, 예술 경험은 부모–자녀 간 대화·공감·성찰을 매개하는 관계적 자 원으로 기능하며, 가정 내 정서적 소통 구조를 형성하였다. 본 연구는 문화예술 경험이 어머니의 생애 전반을 관통하는 실천적 자원이자 가족 기반 문화예술교육의 핵심 요소임을 밝히며, 부모의 문화예술 경험을 교육 프 로그램 설계에 적극적으로 반영할 필요성을 제기한다.
