This study analyses the life of Abdullah Qodiriy, a highly influential 20th-century Uzbek writer and poet, and offers an in-depth examination of his representative novel O‘tkan kunlar (Bygone Days). It investigates how the text reflects Uzbek literature and traditional culture, depicts historical figures and events, and portrays the pain and sorrow experienced by Uzbeks as their homeland became a colony of the Russian Empire. In addition, the study examines the novel’s main storyline - particularly the love between the protagonists Otabek and Kumush, the involvement of Otabek’s second wife Zaynab, and the broader socio-political circumstances surrounding the Russian Empire’s invasion of Turkestan. The study argues that Jadidism constitutes the core ideological foundation of Qodiriy’s literary thought and positions the author as a reform-minded intellectual who sought to eradicate ignorance and outdated customs within his nation. The analysis further demonstrates that Bygone Days is not merely a romantic narrative but a historical allegory that encapsulates the tragic realities of Uzbekistan’s past. By interpreting symbolic meanings of major events-such as the Russian invasion, the collapse of the political authority, internal fragmentation and various social contradictions—the study reveals that Qodiriy located the roots of national tragedy not only in external imperial forces but also in internal pre-modern problems, and critically reflected on both.

본 연구는 20세기 우즈베키스탄에서의 영향력이 강한 작가이자 시인인 압둘라 코디리의 생애와 그의『아팠 던 시간들(O‘tkan kunlar)』이라는 대표 작품을 분석하여 우즈베키스탄의 문학 및 전통문화, 역사적 인물이나 사건, 러시아 제국의 식민지가 된 조국에 대한 우즈베크인들의 아픔과 슬픔을 논의하였다. 또한, 작품의 주 내 용인 주인공 오타벡과 쿠무쉬의 사랑 이야기, 그리고 그들 사이에 끼어든 오타벡의 둘째 부인 자이납의 이야 기, 더 나아가 러시아 제국의 투르키스탄 침략 등의 사회적, 정치적 상황을 고찰하였다. 본 연구는 코디리 문학의 핵심 사상이 자디디즘에 있음을 논증하며, 작가가 민족 내부의 무지와 구습 타파 에 앞장섰던 개혁적 지식인이었음을 규명하였다. 심층 분석 결과, 그의 대표작 『아팠던 시간들』은 단순한 남 녀의 서사를 넘어 우즈베키스탄의 비극적인 역사적 사실들을 담고 있는 역사적 알레고리 작품임을 확인하였 다. 구체적으로, 러시아 제국의 침략과 국가 붕괴, 내부 분열 및 사회적 모순 등의 주요 사건들이 지니는 상징 적인 의미를 분석하여, 작가가 비극의 근원을 외부 세력뿐만 아니라 내부의 전근대적인 병폐에서 찾고 이를 비 판적으로 성찰했음을 밝혀냈다.
