This study examines the Cheoyongam legend transmitted in the Ulsan region, with a focus on clarifying the cultural status that Cheoyongam holds for local communities and exploring its potential for contemporary application. The legend frames Cheoyongam—located at the geographical boundary where sea and land meet—as a sacred site where the powers of the East Sea Dragon King and King Heongang intersect, particularly through narratives involving their encounter, the construction of Manghaesa Temple, and the dispatch of Cheoyong. In versions combined with accounts of Ulsan militia during the Japanese invasions of 1592, Cheoyongam is further layered as a communal historical space that preserves memories of resistance and functions as a protective presence for the region. In this way, the Cheoyongam legend operates as a cultural stratum in which Ulsan’s geographical characteristics, communal memory, and dragon-spirit beliefs have accumulated over time. Based on these findings, this study proposes ways to reinterpret the Cheoyongam legend for contemporary cultural content and regional identity formation. In particular, narrative motifs such as the “harmonization of sea and land” and the use of visual storytelling techniques—including media façades and drone shows—offer effective strategies for reimagining the Cheoyongam legend as a modern cultural resource.

본고는 울산지역에서 전승되는 처용암 전설을 대상으로 처용암이 지 역민에게 어떠한 위상으로 자리하고 있는지를 규명하고 이를 토대로 현대적 활용 가능성을 모색하였다. 처용암 전설에서는 동해용왕과 헌 강왕의 조우, 망해사 건립과 처용의 파견 등의 서사를 통해 바다와 육 지가 만나는 지리적 경계 공간인 처용암이 땅과 바다의 힘이 교류한 신 성한 장소로 의미화된다. 또한 임진왜란기 의병 서사와 결합된 이야기 에서는 처용암이 울산의 항전 기억이 축적된 공동체적 역사 공간이자 지역을 지키는 수호신적 장소로 중층화되어 있음이 확인된다. 이처럼 처용암 전설은 울산의 지리적 특성과 공동체적 기억, 용신 신앙이 축적 된 문화적 지층으로 기능해왔다. 이를 활용하여 울산지역의 정체성을 재해석하고 문화콘텐츠를 개발할 수 있다. 특히 ‘바다와 육지의 화합’이라는 서사 모티프를 활용한 콘텐츠 개발, 미디어파사드·드론쇼 등 시각기반 스토리텔링 기획 등은 처용암 전설을 현대적 문화자원으로 재해 석하는 유효한 방안이 될 수 있을 것이다.
