The standard account of hope defines hope in terms of the desire condition and belief condition. Several criticisms, however, have recently been raised against this standard account. The core of these criticisms is that there exist counterexamples that, while not considered hope under the standard account, should clearly be regarded as hope. To avoid these counterexamples, two alternative theoretical approaches have been proposed. One attempts to introduce a third necessary condition in addition to the two conditions presented by the standard account, while the other seeks to modify or supplement at least one of these two conditions. I shall argue that none of these attempts are satisfactory and present a new task that a appropriate theory of hope should address, which is to provide criteria that distinguishes hopes from false hopes.

희망에 대한 표준 이론은 희망을 믿음 조건과 욕구 조건을 통해서 정의한다. 하지만 최 근 표준 설명에 대해서 다양한 비판들이 제기되었다. 비판의 핵심은 표준 설명에서는 희망 으로 간주되지 않지만 분명히 희망이라고 보아야 할 반례들이 존재한다는 것이다. 표준 설 명에 대한 반례들을 피하고자 두 가지 방향의 대안 이론들이 제기되었다. 하나는 표준 설 명이 제시하는 두 조건 이외에 제삼의 필요조건을 제시하고자 시도하고, 다른 하나는 이 두 조건 중 적어도 하나를 수정하거나 보완하고자 시도한다. 필자는 이러한 시도들 가운데 만족스러운 대안 이론이 없다는 것을 보이고, 희망의 본성에 관한 적절한 이론이 설명해야 할 새 과제를 제시한다. 그것은 희망을 거짓 희망과 구별할 수 있어야 한다는 것이다.
