This study analyzes Park In-hwan’s America Sicho (American Poetry Anthology) based on first-hand materials obtained through a field study in the United States and on an understanding of “time and space” reflected in the text. Park’s travel route—Olympia → Tacoma → Seattle → Everett → Anacortes → Deception Pass → Port Angeles → Portland/Gresham— was reconstructed by cross-referencing his poems, essays, and letters and was visualized on a map along with a catalog of related poems. Written after Park’s rare postwar trip to America, the work reflects both fascination with and alienation from modern material civilization. The recurring images of television, electric washing machines, calorie-free beer, and state parks serve not merely as exotic scenery but as signs of the vast cultural and economic gap between Korea and the United States. Diorama photographs from the in Tacoma illustrate this disparity. The Man on the Bridge is identified as being set at the Deception Pass Bridge, its “anxiety” interpreted as both personal and national. Transparent Variety, linked to Seattle, presents a collage of commercial and leisure spaces that reveal the pulse of postwar urban modernity. Site photographs further substantiate the interpretive readings.

이 논문은 미국 답사를 통해 얻은 자료와 거기서 얻은 ‘시간과 공간’에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 박인환의 <아메리카 시초>를 분석해 본 것이다. 먼저 박인환 의 여행 경로를 시, 산문 서간 자료와 대조하여 “올림피아 → 터코마 → 시애 틀 → 에버릿 → 아나코테스 → 디셉션 패스 ->포트 앤젤리스 → 포틀랜드·그 래셤”으로 정리하였다. 그리고 각 장소를 지도에 표시하여 이동경로를 한눈에 볼 수 있게 한 후 각 장소와 관련이 있는 시를 목록으로 만들어 보았다. <아메리카 시초〉는 한국전쟁 직후 극소수의 사람에게만 주어졌던 기회를 통 해 미국 여행을 한 후 쓴 시다. 박인환 시 속에 자주 드러나는 낯선 물질문명-텔레비전, 전기세탁기, 칼로리가 없는 맥주, 주립 공원은 단순한 이국적 풍경이 아니라 한국과 미국의 격차를 드러내는 징후이다. 이 격차를 보여주기 위해 필 자는 여러 자료와 함께 타코마(박인환이 기항한 도시)의 박물관에서 찍은 1950 년대 타코마 모습을 재현한 디오라마를 제시하였다. 시 ｢다리 위의 사람｣은 실제 작품의 무대가 되는 장소가 있는데, 그 다리가 ‘디셉션 패스 다리’임을 현장 조사로 확증하였다. 시에 드러나는 디셉션 패스 다리, 절벽, 철제 난간, 로사리오 해협의 사진을 제시함으로써 논거를 확실히 하였다. 시에 드러나는 ‘불안’은 개인적인 불안일 수도 있지만 ‘국가적 불안’일 수도 있음도 더불어 밝혔다. ｢투명한 버라이어티｣는 ‘시애틀’과 관련이 있는 부 분이 시애틀의 중심가를 채운 상업. 오락·숙박·외교·상점 시설을 ‘콜라주’하여 도시 시애틀의 활기 및 소비문화를 드러낸 것으로 보았다. 박인환이 가보았음직 한 시애틀의 장소 사진을 제시함으로써 시 해석의 논거로 삼았다.
