The “Yushan Poetry Collection” is a handwritten manuscript of classical Chinese poetry left behind by the late Korean Empire literati painter Cho Woo-hak(曺友鶴, 1886?–1929) during his exile in Wujin, Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, China, in the mid-to-late 1920s. It stands as the only known personal handwritten poetry collection from a Korean exile in China dating to the late 1920s discovered to date. The collection includes literary works composed by Cho Woo-hak in Changzhou between 1925 and 1928(44 poems and 3 prose pieces), related works by his local Chinese acquaintance Yin Hao (殷灝) from the second half of 1928(11 poems and 2 letters), and one poem by another acquaintance of Cho’s, Yang Huansheng(楊煥昇). Although this collection was first unveiled as early as 2000, it has not yet received sufficient academic attention. This paper takes the “Yushan Poetry Collection”(a photocopy), known to be Cho Woo-hak’s manuscript, as its primary research subject. From a philological or bibliographical perspective, it meticulously examines and introduces elements that can reconstruct the original collection’s entirety. These elements include the circumstances of its discovery in South Korea since 2000, its structural characteristics, its creator and background, the condition of the manuscript, and the nature of its contents. Through this detailed study, the paper aims to broaden the understanding of the previously obscure late Korean Empire literati painter Cho Woo-hak and his “Yushan Poetry Collection,” while also elucidating the collection’s value as cultural-historical material.

『옥산시집(玉山詩集)』은 구한말 문인 조우학(曺友鶴, 1886?－1929)이 20세기 20년대 중 후반, 중국 쟝수성(江蘇省) 창저우 우진(常州 武進)에 망명하여 남겨놓은 필사본 한시(漢詩) 시집이다. 『(玉山詩集)』은 현재까지 중국 현지에서 발견된 20년대 후반기 망명 조선 인의 유일한 개인 필사본 시집으로서 여기에는 1925–1928년 사이에 조우학이 창저우에서 창 작한 시문(시 44수, 산문 2편)과 1928년 하반기에 현지 중국 지인인 인하오(殷灝)가 창작한 조우학 관련 시문(시 11수, 서찰 3편), 그리고 조우학의 지인인 양환성(楊煥昇)의 시 한 수가 수록되어 있다. 위 시집은 일찍 2000년에 처음 공개되었음에도 현재까지 학계의 충분한 주목 을 받지 못했다. 본 논문은 조우학의 필사본으로 알려진 『옥산시집(玉山詩集)』(복사본)을 주요 연구대상으 로 삼고 문헌학, 또는 서지학적 시각에서 국내에서 2000년 이래 현재까지 진행되어 온 『옥산 시집(玉山詩集)』의 발굴 경위와 그 시집의 체제 특징, 제작자 및 배경, 필사 상태, 수록 내용 양상 등 원 시집의 전모(全貌)를 재구(再構)할 수 있는 요소들을 자세히 고찰하여 소개함으로 써 여태까지 신원이 확실치 않았던 구한말 문인 조우학과 그의 시집 『옥산시집(玉山詩集)』에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓힘과 아울러 위 시집이 지니고 있는 문화 사료적 가치를 규명하고자 하였 다. 본 연구가 동아시아 격변기에 식민지 조선을 떠나 중국에 망명했던 문인 조우학과 그의 한문학, 그리고 그와 창저우 문인들 간 교류와 교유의 실상을 이해하는 데 도움이 될 수 있길 기대한다.
