This study explores how mothers’ roles are reconstructed during adolescents’ career-decision processes and how support methods are developed and practiced accordingly. For this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted with ten mothers in their 40s and 50s who had experience participating in their adolescents’ career decision-making toward a specific job goal, and the collected data were analyzed using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) method. The findings revealed that, first, the participants closely observed their adolescents’ talents and aptitudes and sought to connect them to potential careers, grounded in the belief that mothers best understood their strengths and temperaments. Second, based on their educational and social experiences, they tried to provide practical support for their adolescents’ career decision-making through efforts to learn and acquire knowledge related to their adolescents’ desired career paths. Third, while respecting adolescents’ autonomy in career decisions, their goal was to clearly convey their experiences and values in order to help adolescents develop their careers, enhance their strengths, and grow into independent members of society. In this study, the participants were not subjects shaped by the culture of excessive educational competition, but proactive agents who reorganized and learned their roles as mothers to help their adolescents decide on their careers and to seek effective ways to support them. In addition, there is a need for the provision of systematic and structured guidance and education on the vocational world, enabling middle-aged adults to effectively fulfill their developmental tasks while supporting adolescents’ career development in diverse and meaningful ways.

본 연구는 자녀의 진로결정 과정에서 어머니 역할이 어떻게 재구성되며, 그에 따른 지원 방식이 어떤 형태로 전개되고 실천되는지를 탐색한다. 이에 따라 구체적인 직업을 목표로 한 자녀의 진로결정 경험이 있는 40-50대 어머니 10명을 대상으로 심층인터뷰를 실시하고, 그 내용을 해석현상학적 분석(IPA) 방법으로 분석하였다. 연구결과, 첫째, 연구참여자들은 자녀의 장점과 기질을 가장 잘 알아볼 수 있는 것은 어머니라는 믿음으로 자녀의 재능과 적성을 세심하게 관찰하고 진로와 연결시켰다. 둘째, 자신의 교육과 사회활동 경험을 토대 로 자녀의 희망진로와 관련된 지식을 습득하는 노력과 학습을 통해 자녀의 진로결정에 실 질적인 도움을 주고자 하였다. 셋째, 진로결정에 있어 자녀의 자율성을 존중하면서도 자신 의 경험과 가치관을 명확히 전달하여, 자녀 스스로 진로를 결정하고 강점을 발전시켜 독립 적인 사회 구성원으로 성장할 수 있도록 지원하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 본 연구에서 참여 자들은 경쟁적 교육환경 속에서 과잉 교육열의 주체가 아닌 자녀의 진로결정을 돕기 위해 어머니 역할을 재구성하고 학습하여 그 지원방식을 모색하는 능동적 행위자로의 모습을 보여준다. 나아가 이들의 중년기 발달과업의 수행과 자녀의 진로결정과정을 돕기 위해서는 직업 세계에 대한 체계적이고 구조화된 안내와 교육이 마련될 필요성이 제기된다.
