This study explores the practical applicability of the concept of typicity (典型性) as a criterion for the succession of traditional craftsmanship within the realm of intangible cultural heritage (ICH). The existing ICH system has long emphasized preservation centered on archetypality (原形性)—based on original forms—and formal reproduction. However, this approach limits the inclusion of contemporary creative practices such as sensory adjustments, material experimentation, and contextual reinterpretation by artisans. To address this limitation, this research utilizes typicity—defined as the "representative practice recognized within a community"—as an analytical framework to conduct an in-depth case study of Master Park Kang-yong, a lacquerware artisan designated as Jeollabuk-do Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 13. Through semi-structured oral interviews and field observations, cross-validated with patent documents and media reports, the study traces how traditional techniques are reconfigured within contemporary sensibilities and social contexts. The analysis confirms that Master Park's practice satisfies all four criteria of typicity: coexistence of historicity and presentness, simultaneous reflection of form and principle, reflection of regional and socio-cultural contexts, and autonomous succession within the community. His work, including the development of lacquer paints, the creation of practical living craft items, and the operation of regional education programs, demonstrates a dynamic process where tradition is reconstructed through sensory practice and market-oriented strategies. These findings support that typicity, by emphasizing representativeness, community-based continuity, and responsiveness to contemporary demands, can serve as a valid conceptual framework for approaching the practical implementation of ICH. This research offers a critical perspective on the limitations of institutionalized preservation and holds significance as fundamental data for expanding the methodology of traditional craft research and enhancing the flexibility of future cultural heritage administration.

본 연구는 전통공예 계승의 기준으로 논의되는 무형유산의 전형성(典型性, prototypicality) 개념의 실천적 적용 가능성을 탐구한다. 기존의 무형유산 제도 는 기원적 형태를 기준으로 하는 원형성(原形性, archetypality) 중심의 보존과 형식적 재현을 강조해 왔으나, 이는 장인의 감각적 조정, 재료 실험, 맥락적 재 해석 등 동시대의 창의적 실천을 포괄하지 못하는 한계를 지닌다. 이러한 한계 를 보완하기 위해, 본 연구는 공동체 내에서 대표적이라 여겨지는 현재적 실천 을 의미하는 전형성을 분석틀로 삼아 전라북도 무형문화유산 박강용 칠장의 사 례를 심층 분석하였다. 구술 면담과 현장 관찰을 병행하고 특허 문헌, 언론 보 도 등 실증 자료를 교차검증 하며, 전통 기술이 동시대적 감각과 사회적 맥락 속에서 어떻게 재구성되는지를 추적하였다. 분석 결과, 박강용 장인의 실천은 전형성의 네 가지 판단 기준(역사성과 현재성의 공존, 형식과 원리의 동시 반 영, 지역 및 사회문화적 맥락의 반영, 공동체 내부의 자율적 계승)을 모두 충족 함을 확인하였다. 그의 작업은 옻칠 물감 개발, 생활공예품 제작, 지역 교육 프 로그램 운영 등 감각적 실천과 시장 중심의 전략을 통해 전통이 재구성되는 역 동적 과정을 보여주었다. 이러한 분석 결과는 전형성이 대표성과 공동체 기반 의 지속성, 동시대적 요구에 대한 반응성을 강조함으로써, 무형유산의 실천적 구현을 검증하는 유효한 개념적 틀이 될 수 있음을 입증한다. 본 연구는 제도 적 보존의 한계에 대한 비판적 시각을 제공하며, 전통공예 연구의 방법론적 확 장과 향후 문화유산 행정의 유연성 제고를 위한 기초 자료로서 의의를 지닌다.
