This This study analyzes how Jeonil Building 245, revitalized from a historical site of the May 18th Democratization Movement, contributes to community revitalization through a case study, literature review, and in-depth interviews. The research findings are as follows. First, regarding ‘Embodied Memory,’ Jeonil Building 245 facilitates the re-establishment of intangible historical value within individuals through physical evidence and immersive technology. This process helps visitors recognize the May 18th event as a contemporary issue, fostering a sense of civic responsibility and encouraging critical discussion. Second, in terms of ‘Symbolism,’ the building transforms personal pain into a collective experience, forging shared emotional bonds and strengthening collective identity, thereby laying the foundation for civic solidarity. Third, concerning ‘Connection to the Present,’ Jeonil Building 245 establishes a cooperative network among various stakeholders based on the May 18th narrative, contributing to the creation of new public value and the development of social capital within the local community. Fourth, with respect to ‘Diversity of Meaning,’ the building links the past event to current social issues, transforming the spirit of resistance of May 18th into active responses to contemporary challenges, shifting visitors from passive recipients to active producers of memory. This study concludes that places of memory play a key role in activating civic communities by promoting community solidarity and citizen participation through historical reinterpretation, thus offering both academic and practical implications for the future formation and development of places of memory.

본 연구는 5・18 민주화운동 사적지에서 복합문화공간으로 재탄생한 전일빌 딩 245 사례를 중심으로, 기억의 장소가 공동체 활성화에 어떻게 기여하는지 분 석하였다. 연구 방법으로는 질적 사례연구를 채택하고 문헌 조사와 심층 인터뷰 를 진행하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, ‘체현된 기억'의 측면에서 전일 빌딩 245는 물리적 증거와 몰입형 기술을 매개로 무형의 역사적 가치를 개인의 내면에서 재정립하도록 도우며, 방문객으로 하여금 5・18 민주화운동을 시민적 책임 의식을 내면화하는 현재의 문제를 인식하게 하고 비판적 논의를 촉발한다. 둘째, ‘상징성'은 개인의 아픔을 공동체의 경험으로 확장시켜 공유된 정서적 유 대를 형성하고 집단적 정체성을 강화함으로써 시민 연대 형성의 기반이 된다. 셋째, ‘현재와의 연결성' 측면에서 전일빌딩 245는 5・18 민주화운동 서사를 기 반으로 다양한 주체의 협력 네트워크를 구축하여 지역 발전의 동력을 확보하고, 나아가 지역사회의 사회적 자본을 발전시키는 데 기여한다. 넷째, ‘의미의 다양 성' 측면에서 전일빌딩 245는 5・18 민주화운동의 저항 정신을 현안에 대응하는 행동으로 전환시키며, 방문객을 기억의 수용자에서 능동적 생산자로 전환시킨다. 본 연구는 기억의 장소가 역사적 재해석을 기반으로 공동체 연대와 시민 참여를 유도하여 시민공동체 활성화에 핵심적 역할을 함을 밝힘으로써, 향후 기억의 장 소 형성 및 발전에 있어 학술적・실무적 시사점을 제공한다.
