This study examines how peace discourse surrounding the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) has shifted from a security-centered, structural model to a micro-level understanding of peace grounded in affect, relationality, and everyday practices. Using news articles from 1990 to 2021, the study analyzes major DMZ-related exhibitions, performances, and festivals through an interpretive framework drawn from contemporary peace studies. The findings show that cultural and artistic activities have reconfigured the emotional landscape of the DMZ, expanded relational interactions among residents, artists, institutions, and visitors, and facilitated the normalization of the DMZ as an accessible everyday space. Since 2018, these practices increasingly demonstrate that peace is produced through accumulated emotions, interactions, and lived experiences rather than institutional agreements alone. This study offers a long-term perspective on the cultural transformation of the DMZ and provides policy implications for developing it into a citizen-centered cultural and ecological peace-building ecosystem.

본 연구는 지난 30여 년간 DMZ를 둘러싼 평화담론이 군사·안보 중심의 구 조적 접근에서 정동·관계·일상 기반의 미시적 평화 개념으로 확장되어 온 흐 름에 주목하고, 이러한 담론 전환이 DMZ 문화예술 활동에서 어떠한 방식으로 실천적으로 나타났는지를 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 1990년부터 2021 년까지의 DMZ 관련 전시·공연·축제에 대한 언론기사 데이터를 수집·정리하 고, 국제 평화연구에서 제시된 정동(affect)–관계(relationality)–일상(everydayness) 의 구성요소를 해석틀로 삼아 시기별 문화예술 활동의 변화 양상을 검토하였다. 분석 결과, DMZ 문화예술 활동은 ① 분단과 폭력의 기억을 관조·연대·치 유의 감정 구조로 전환하는 정동의 재배열, ② 주민·예술가·기관·방문객 간 의 접촉과 협업을 확장하는 관계 구조의 재편, ③ 비일상적 경계로 인식되던 DMZ를 시민의 생활세계로 통합시키는 일상적 공간성의 회복이라는 세 층위에 서 단계적 전환을 보여주었다. 특히 2018년 이후의 흐름은 평화가 제도적 선언 이나 정책 담론을 넘어, 문화예술 실천을 통해 감정·상호작용·경험의 축적 속에서 형성되는 과정임을 구체적으로 드러낸다. 본 연구는 장기 시계열 데이터를 기반으로 DMZ 문화예술 활동의 구조적 변 화를 해석한 최초의 시도라는 점에서 학술적 의의를 갖는다. 또한 DMZ를 상 징·기념·안보 중심 공간에서 시민 참여형 문화·생태 기반 공공문화 생태계 로 전환해야 한다는 정책적 방향성을 제시함으로써, 향후 DMZ 평화정책 및 문 화예술 활용 전략 수립에 중요한 근거를 제공한다.
