This thesis examines the deficiency and transformation of war memories represented in the Hikaru Okuizumi's novel The History of a Stone by paying attention to the point where Manase's war memories were cut off. This novel reveals the problems of the way Japan responded to the memories of war in post–war society. The cave on Leyte Island, where stayed until Manase, a Japanese defeated soldier on the Philippine front at the end of the war, became a prisoner of the Allied Forces, is the space of war defeat which made the negative feeling against the war maximized. He was in conflict there between a sergeant who is about to die and a captain ordering him to kill the sergeant. After the war, Manase does not remember what happened then, and transforms and distorts the memory into a beautiful ending. This Manase's memory shows the problems of Japanese society, which has failed to create an opportunity to introspect and communicate on the war from a critical perspective, resulting in the failure to face and objectify the actions during the war. Eighty years after the war, when the memories of war are talked about by the postwar generation who have no direct experience of war, The History of a Stone is the work that raises the question how the postwar generation will face and inherit the ambiguous and transformed memories of war

이 논문은 오쿠이즈미 히카루의 소설 『돌의 내력』의 작중인물 마나세의 전쟁 기억이 단절된 지점에 주목하여 전쟁 기억의 결락과 변형을 살펴보고, 이를 바탕 으로 전후 일본사회에서 전쟁의 기억을 대응해 온 방식의 문제점을 살펴본 것이 다. 전쟁 말기 필리핀 전선에서 패배한 일본군 패잔병 마나세가 연합군 포로가 되기 전까지 버틴 레이테 섬의 동굴은 전쟁이라는 부(負)의 기억이 극대화된 전쟁 패퇴의 공간이다. 그는 이곳에서 죽음이 임박한 상등병과 그를 죽이라고 명령하는 대위 사이에서 갈등하다 상등병에게 칼을 휘둘러 죽음에 이르게 하는데, 전후에 마나세는 이때의 일을 기억해내지 못하고 결락된 전쟁의 기억을 미화된 결말로 변형시키고 왜곡한다. 이러한 마나세의 기억의 행태는 스스로의 행위를 마주하고 객관화하지 못한 결과로, 자국이 벌인 침략전쟁과 그 속에서의 자신의 행위를 비 판적 시각에서 바라보고 성찰할 수 있는 계기를 전후의 시점에서 만들지 못한 일 본사회의 문제점을 단적으로 보여준다. 전후 80년이 지나며 직접적인 전쟁 체험이 없는 전후세대에 의해 전쟁의 기억 이 이야기되는 시점에서, 􋺷돌의 내력􋺸은 전후세대인 작자가 전쟁 체험의 기억을 갖고 전후를 살아가는 시점인물을 설정하여, 전쟁을 체험한 세대의 애매하고 변형 된 전쟁의 기억을 전후 세대가 어떻게 마주하고 계승해갈 것인가의 문제를 제기한 작품이라고 할 수 있다.
