The purpose of this study was to select pragmatic leadership cases from Park Hak-rae’s “Hakchojeon” and analyze their characteristics using historiometric methods. This study briefly introduced the CIP leadership model, which served as a framework for exploring the leadership of historical leaders by analyzing their biographies and autobiographies. Next, the key characteristics of pragmatic leadership within this model were summarized. The Korean translation of “Hakchojeon,” published by the Donghak Peasant Revolution Foundation, was used as the subject of this study. The study divided Park Hak-rae’s life into three periods: before and after his entry into and activities in Donghak. The titles and outlines of the 20 leadership cases were provided, and each case was analyzed according to three criteria: pragmatic leadership behavior type, risk-taking index, and social impact index. The results of analyzing the 20 selected leadership cases using historiometric methods are as follows. Before joining the Donghak, Park Hak-rae used his literacy skills to serve as a “pragmatic helper” who assisted his residents with their civil affairs. During his period of joining the Donghak and activities, Park Hak-rae achieved top results by demonstrating his “pragmatic leadership.” Even after naturalization and his period of exile, Park Hak-rae continued to be active as a “pragmatic leader”. This study used historiometric methods to analyze Park Hakrae’s pragmatic leadership. However, it did not analyze the charismatic and ideological leadership types of the CIP leadership model, and did not specifically analyze detailed components other than the model’s sense-making actions, such as developmental experiences, prescriptive mental models, and moderators. Future research should compare and analyze the leadership styles of top Donghak leaders, such as Jeon Bong-jun and Son Byeong-hui, based on the CIP leadership model.

이 연구의 목적은 박학래가 저술한 『학초전』에 나타난 실용적 리더 십 사례를 선정하여 계량역사학적 방법으로 리더십의 특성을 분석하는 것이다. 이 연구의 주요 내용으로 역사적 리더들의 전기나 자서전을 분석하여 그들의 리더십을 탐구하는 틀로서 활용되고 있는 CIP 리더 십 모델이 간략히 소개되었다. 다음으로, 이 모델의 리더십 유형들 가 운데 실용적 리더십의 주요 특징을 요약하였다. 동학농민혁명기념재단 에서 발간한 국역본 『학초전』을 연구대상으로 하여 박학래의 생애에서 동학의 입도와 활동을 기준으로 전과 후로 구분한 세 가지 시기별로 핵 심 사례를 정리하였다. 선정된 20개 리더십 사례의 제목과 개요를 작성하였고, 각 사례별로 실용적 리더십의 행동유형, 위험감수 지수, 그 리고 사회적 영향도 지수 등 세 가지 기준에 따라 분석하였다. 선정된 20개 리더십 사례를 계량역사학적 방법으로 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 동학 입도 이전 시기의 박학래는 문해능력을 활용하여 주민들의 민원을 도와주는 ‘실용적 조력자’의 역할을 수행하였다. 동학 입도 및 활동 시기의 박학래는 ‘실용적 리더십’을 발휘하여 최고의 성과를 달성하였다. 귀화 이후 피신 시기의 박학래는 피신 중임에도 불 구하고 ‘실용적 리더’로서 지속적으로 활동하였다. 이 연구에서는 계량역사학적 방법을 사용하여 박학래의 실용적 리더 십 사례를 중심으로 분석하였으나, CIP 리더십 모델의 카리스마적 리 더십과 이념적 리더십 유형을 분석하지 않았으며, 리더십 모델의 의미 구축 행동 이외의, 발달경험, 처방적 멘탈 모델, 조절변수 등과 같은 세부 구성요소를 구체적으로 분석하지 못하였다. 앞으로 CIP 리더십 모델에 기반하여 전봉준이나 손병희 등과 같은 동학 최고지도자들의 리더십 유형을 비교하여 분석하는 후속연구가 수행되어야 할 것이다.
