This article examines how the provisions related to symbiotic spirit in the 1948 Constitution connect with the Donghak and Cheondogyo. The ideology of republicanism, which can be considered political coexistence, can be found in Donghak and Cheondogyo’s republican aspirations, the idea of “Donggwiilche,” the vigilance of each person’s self-interest, and the pursuit of a world republic. Economic symbiosis, which can be considered economic democratization, the right to share profits, and the system of public ownership, can be seen in Cheondogyo’s “Donggwiilche” democratic economy, Donghak’s “Yumu Sangja,” Cheondogyo’s restrictions on private ownership, and its advocacy for the nationalization of land and large-scale industrial complexes. Social symbiosis, which can be considered social welfare, can be found in Donghak’s “Cheonjikcheonnokseol,” Cheondogyo’s “Artistic Labor and Creative Life,” and its respect for women and children. Symbiosis with nature goes beyond the constitution’s human-centered environmental protection to demonstrate a deep ecological dimension that respects nature itself. Today, the symbiotic spirit is an important political and social value, and the symbiotic spirit of Donghak and Cheondogyo, which forms the basis of the spirit of the 1948 Constitution, will provide important implications for future discussions on constitutional amendment.
