The purpose of this study is to analyze research trends on Donghak(Cheondogyo) in North Korea, to broaden the horizon of understanding Donghak, and to explore the possibility of dialogue with Juche philosophy(主體哲學) from an internal structural perspective, thereby using it as a lever for inter- Korean dialogue. The content of the study is as follows: First, it examined the changes in North Korea’s perception of traditional religions and the overall flow of research on traditional thought, while cataloging more than sixty North Korean studies on Donghak (Cheondogyo) to identify research trends. Second, research on Donghak and Cheondogyo was classified by topic into: ‘the background and status of Donghak thought,’ ‘the patriotic and people-loving character of Donghak(Cheondogyo),’ ‘the idea of human equality and its features in Donghak,’ and ‘in-depth analyses and limitations of Donghak thought.’ Third, studies on Lee Don-hwa’s ‘Shinin Philosophy(新人哲學)’ were also categorized by theme, examining its significance as the development of Donghak thought, the systematization of Cheondogyo philosophy, the culmination of modern philosophy, and a precursor to Juche philosophy. Fourth, among monographs, particular attention was given to Park Chang-yeon’s A Study of Cheondogyo Thought, analyzing his interpretation of the philosophical transition from Donghak to Cheondogyo in terms of views on nature, views on humanity, and socio-political perspectives. The findings of this study not only broaden the horizon of understanding Donghak and provide implications for the study of Donghak(Cheondogyo) in South Korea, but also open up the possibility of dialogue between Shinin Philosophy and Juche philosophy.

이 연구의 목적은 북한의 동학(천도교)에 대한 연구 동향을 분석하여 동학 이해의 지평을 확장시키고 주체철학과의 대화 가능성을 내부구조 적 측면에서 타진해 보아 남북대화의 지렛대로 삼고자 한 것이다. 연구내용은 첫째, 북한의 전통종교에 대한 인식변화와 전통사상연 구에 대한 전체적인 흐름을 파악하고, 60여 편이 넘는 북한의 동학(천 도교) 연구성과를 목록화하여 연구동향을 파악하였다. 둘째, 동학·천 도교에 관한 연구를 주제별로 나누어 ‘동학사상의 발생 배경과 위상’, ‘동학(천도교)의 애국·애민적 성격’, ‘동학의 인간평등사상과 특징’, ‘동 학사상의 심층적 분석과 제한점’으로 분류하였다. 셋째, 이돈화의 ‘신 인철학’에 관한 연구 역시 주제별로 분류하여 동학사상의 발전이자 천 도교철학의 체계화로서 그리고 근대철학의 총결산이자 주체철학의 전 단계로서의 위상을 살펴보았다. 넷째, 단행본 가운데 박창연의 『천도 교의 사상연구』를 집중적으로 분석하여 그가 파악한 동학에서 천도교 로의 철학적 변화를 자연에 대한 견해, 사람에 관한 견해, 사회정치적 견해로 나누어 정리하였다. 이 연구 결과는 동학 이해의 지평을 확장시키고 남한의 동학(천도교) 연구에 시사점을 줄 뿐만 아니라 신인철학과 주체철학과의 대화 가능 성을 열어준다고 할 수 있다.
