The purpose of this study is to explore effective approaches to improving the reading fluency of lower-grade elementary school students by utilizing an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot. With the growing emphasis on the need for EdTech to support personalized learning in schools, this study applied an AI chatbot to reading instruction to investigate its potential for enhancing students’ engagement and promoting reading fluency through repeated practice. An AI chatbot–based reading program was designed and implemented for first-grade elementary school students. The results indicated that the AI chatbot had a positive impact on students’ reading speed, accuracy, and expressiveness, and also significantly improved their learning motivation. By presenting a practical case of reading instruction supported by AI technology, this study provides foundational insights for the development and application of AI-based reading support tools for lower-grade elementary students.

본 연구는 인공지능(AI) 챗봇을 활용하여 초등학교 저학년 학생의 읽기 유창성을 효과적으로 향상시킬 수 있는 방안을 탐색하는 데 목적이 있다. 최근 교육 현장에서 학생 맞춤형 학습을 지원하기 위한 에듀테크의 필요성이 대두됨에 따라 본 연구에서는 AI 챗봇을 읽기 교육에 적 용하여 학습자의 흥미 유발과 반복 학습을 통한 읽기 유창성 증진 가능성을 살펴보았다. 연구는 읽기가 완전하지 않은 초등학교 1학년 학생 을 대상으로 하는 AI 챗봇 기반 읽기 프로그램을 설계‧구현하여 운영하였다. 본 연구에서 개발한 AI 챗봇은 학생들의 읽기 속도, 정확성, 표 현력 향상에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤으며 학습 동기도 향상시켰다. 본 연구는 AI 기술을 활용한 읽기 교수-학습의 실천적 사례를 제시함으로 써 초등 저학년 학생을 위한 AI 기반 읽기 지원 도구 개발과 활용 가능성에 기초 자료를 제공한다.
