This paper examines the transmission of Buddhist rituals and the arrangement of offerings through the paper flowers preserved at Anjeongsa Temple. It also considers their significance by comparing them with the paper flowers preserved in Japanese Buddhist rituals. Unlike traditional Buddhist paper flowers, Anjeongsa’s paper flowers are characterized by their arrangement according to the content of the ritual, symbolically representing the meaning of offering flowers and Buddhist philosophy based on Buddhist rites that are no longer practiced today. The Sutra of esoteric buddhism Susiddhi-tantra prescribes offering flowers according to their color. White flowers are offered to the Buddha, while Dharmapala and Deva are primarily offered colored flowers. By examining the color distinctions in the Susiddhi-tantra, one can discern the meaning of the paper flowers at Anjeongsa.Paper flowers are used in the Buddhist ritual called Shunie at Yakushiji and Todai-ji temples in Nara, Japan. Yakushiji Temple is decorated with many paper flowers, known as HANAESIKI, and is passed down not only as a Buddhist tradition but also as a local event. The paper flowers at Todaiji are camellias, which stand in for the sara flowers offered to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. In Southeast Asia, the sara flower is also being replaced by the canonball tree flower. Anjeongsa’s sara flowers resemble the form of the canonball tree flower and the Japanese paper flowers camellias. And Anjeongsa’s white sara flowers symbolize the story of orange sara flowers turning white after the Buddha’s nirvana. Anjeongsa’s paper flowers must be understood through Buddhist rituals and passed down alongside them.

본 논문은 안정사에 전해지는 불교 지화에 대해 불교의례의 전승과 설단 양상 그리고 일본의 불교의례에서 전승되는 지화와의 비교를 통해 그 의의를 고찰하고 자 하였다. 기존의 불교 지화와는 달리 안정사에 전해지는 불교 지화는 지금은 전해지지 않고 있는 화엄성주대재나 제석천왕재 등의 불교의례를 기반으로 하고 있으며 헌화의 의미와 더불어 불교의 사상과 민중의 소망 등의 상징성을 통해 의례의 내용에 맞추어 설단하는 특징이 있다. 즉 화엄성주대재의 경우 지상의 신들과 중생들을 수행을 통해 화엄세계로 이끈다고 하는 주제의식이 지화의 구성과 설단 양상에서 구현되고 있음을 확인하였다. 그리고 밀교경전인 『소실지 갈라경󰡕의 ｢공양화품｣을 통해 불보살에게 공양하는 백색의 꽃이 안정사에서는 상단에 설단되며 제천과 지거천에 주로 바치는 유색의 꽃이라는 내용도 안정사에 전해지는 유색 지화에 반영되고 있었다. 또한 일본 나라의 사찰에서 이어져 온 불교의례인 슈니에와 지화 전승 양상을 통해 안정사 지화와의 유사성과 불교의례에 있어서의 지화의 중요성을 보고자 하였다. 야쿠시지의 슈니에는 다수의 지화를 장식하면서 ‘하나에시키’라는 별칭 으로 지역사회의 중요 행사로 자리 잡아 젊은 세대와의 소통을 통해 불교의례와 지화 전승의 가능성을 보여준다. 도다이지에 전해지는 동백꽃 지화는 동아시아에 자생하지 않는 사라수 꽃을 대체하고 있으며 안정사지화의 사라수 꽃과의 유사성 을 볼 수 있었다. 나아가 안정사에 전해지는 사라수 꽃과 반야화의 관계는 석가의 열반 장면을 상징화하고 있다는 점을 지적하였다.
