Homer Bezaleel Hulbert (1863-1949) was an American Korean missionary, educator, and researcher of Korean studies. In this paper, he revealed his character as a researcher of oral literature in Korea. At the 1893 Chicago Fair, Hulbert published the Dangun Myth, the Park Hyuk-geose Myth, and the Samseong grotto Myth. He also introduced the title of seven editor's notes. They are the first Korean stories that Hulbert introduced to people around the world on record. In this paper, two of the seven stories that only the title was mentioned in the 1893 presentation were found in “Korean Folk-Tales,” which was published in 17 pages by Hulbert in 1902 in a transaction published by the Korean branch of the Royal Asian Society of Great Britain and Ireland. They are “Harun Al Rashid in Korea” and “A Wonderful Pear.” Hulbert's classification of Korean folktales is significant as a personal study. It is also pioneering in that it has a systematic composition and includes a wide range of stories, despite being an early study. However, it is a limitation that the distinction between collecting stories and importing from a book is not clear, and personal rewriting and omission appear.

호머 베절릴 헐버트(Homer Bezaleel Hulbert, 1863~1949)는 미국인 한국 선교 사, 교육가이면서 한국학 연구자였다. 본고에서는 헐버트의 한국 구비문학 연구 자로서의 성격을 밝혔다. 헐버트는 1893년 시카고 박람회에서는 단군신화, 박혁 거세 신화, 삼성혈 신화를 비롯해 편집자 노트의 7편을 합하여 모두 10편의 이야기 를 소개했다. 이 이야기들은 기록 상 헐버트가 최초로 세계인에게 소개한 한국의 이야기들이다. 본고에서는 1893년 발표에서 제목만 언급된 7편의 이야기 중 2편을 헐버트가 1902년 영국왕립아세아학회(Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland) 한국지부에서 발간하는 『트랜잭션(Transaction)』에 17쪽 분량으로 발표한 ｢한국의 민담(Korean Folk-Tales｣에서 찾았다. <한국의 하룬 알 라시드>와 <멋진 배>이다. 헐버트의 한국 설화 분류는 개인 연구이고, 이른 시기 연구였지만 체계적인 구성을 가지고 있고 다방면의 이야기를 포함하고 있다는 점에서 선구적이다. 그러나 채록과 기록의 구분의 뚜렷하지 않고, 개인적인 개작과 누락이 나타나는 것은 한계라 할 수 있다.
