This study aims to understand the belief system and spiritual culture of the Vietnamese people through an exploration of the origins, types, production principles, and cultural meanings of Vietnamese talismans. Vietnamese talismans originated from Chinese Taoism and were introduced during the period of Northern domination. Over time, they developed into an independent and multilayered religious system through the integration of Buddhist traditions, folk beliefs, and indigenous deity worship. Through this transformation, the talisman evolved from a simple magical tool into a sacred object mediating between the human world and the supernatural. Vietnamese talismans are generally classified into “white talismans,” used for auspicious and protective purposes such as blessings and exorcism, and “black talismans,” intended to cause harm to others. In terms of form, they include flat talismans drawn on paper or cloth and three-dimensional talisman coins. The makers - shamans, Taoist priests, or ritual masters - are spiritual practitioners who follow strict rituals such as purification, chanting incantations, performing hand gestures, drawing symbolic figures, and stamping sacred seals. It is believed that the talisman’s efficacy is realized only through the union of symbol (phù) and incantation (chú). Ultimately, Vietnamese talismans represent not mere superstition but a visual embodiment of human hopes and anxieties, a form of living folk spirituality, and a synthesis of Taoist, Buddhist, and folk traditions within Vietnam’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

본 연구는 베트남 부적의 기원과 유형, 제작 원리와 문화적 의미를 고찰 함으로써 베트남인의 신앙과 정신문화를 이해하고자 한다. 베트남의 부적 은 중국 도교에서 비롯되어 북속시대를 거치며 유입된 후, 불교적 전통과 민속신앙, 토착신 숭배가 융합되면서 독자적이고 다층적인 신앙체계로 발 전하였다. 이를 통해 부적은 단순한 주술의 도구를 넘어 인간과 초자연적 존재를 매개하는 신물(神物)로 자리 잡았다. 부적은 길상과 벽사를 위한 ‘흰 부적’과 타인에게 해를 가하는 ‘검은 부적’으로 구분되며, 형태상으로 는 종이나 천에 문양을 그린 평면 부적과 입체 부적이 있다. 박수무당·도사· 법사 등 영적 자격을 갖춘 주술사가 제작자로서 목욕재계와 주문 암송, 수인 수행, 도상 작성, 인장 날인 등의 절차를 거친다. ‘부(符)’와 ‘주(咒)’의 결 합이 완성될 때 비로소 효력이 생긴다고 여겨진다. 이러한 부적은 단순한 미신이 아니라 인간의 염원과 불안을 시각화한 생활신앙이자, 도교·불교·민속신앙이 융합된 베트남의 종합적 정신문화의 표상이다.
