This study aims to re-examine the role of Korean society and Christianity in the latter half of the 20th century and trace the trajectory of the Minjung Church Movement, focusing on the related materials housed at Soongsil University’s Korea Institute for Christian Culture. Specifically, it analyzes the role and evolving patterns of the Minjung Church during the period of social transformation in Korea, based on the activities and resources of Soongsil University’s Institute for Christian Social Studies (established in 1986). Rather than fully exploring the entire history of the Minjung Church, this research intends to look into its fragmentary aspects through the limited collection of materials, thereby reading the footprint of the Minjung Church again in the context of the role of Korean society and Christianity during the late 20th century and the age of suffering. The trajectory of the Minjung Church Movement is a critical historical record illustrating how the upheaval of Korean society and Christian social participation intersected. Especially as Minjung Theology faces the situation of lacking a corresponding movement and creating distance between theory and practice, finding a new place for the church that stands with the Minjung, defined as ‘those who suffer,’ and overcoming the reality of the church combined with success ideology remains a crucial task today. Furthermore, this study is an attempt to restore the history of the Soongsil University Institute for Christian Social Studies—which has now been integrated and whose function and history need to be revisited—by highlighting its tradition and role as a foundational pillar of the Korea Institute Christian Culture Research Institute through its retained archival materials.

이 연구는 숭실대학교 한국기독교문화연구원 소장 민중교회 관련 자료집을 중심으로 20세기 후반기 한국 사회와 기독교의 역할을 재조 명하고 민중교회운동의 발자취를 추적하는 데 목적이 있다. 특히 숭실 대학교 기독교사회연구소(1986년 설립)의 활동과 그 자료를 기반으 로, 한국 사회 변혁기에 민중교회가 수행한 역할과 변화 양상을 분석 하였다. 이 연구는 민중교회 전체 발자취를 더듬어 보는 것이라기보다는 한정된 자료집을 통해 단편적인 모습을 들여다보면서 20세기 후반 기 한국사회와 기독교의 역할과 고통의 시대에 다시 민중교회의 발자 취를 읽어보는 데에 목적이 있다. 민중교회운동의 발자취는 한국 사회 의 격변과 기독교의 사회 참여가 어떻게 만났는지를 보여주는 중요한 사료이다. 특히 민중신학이 운동의 부재와 이론과 실천의 거리두기 상황에 직면함에 따라, 오늘날 성공주의와 결합된 교회 현실을 극복하 고 ‘고통을 당하는 자들’로서의 민중과 함께하는 새로운 교회의 자리를 찾는 것이 중요한 과제로 남았다. 또한 이 연구는 지금은 통합되어 그 기능과 역사를 되짚어 보기를 해야 할 숭실대학교 기독교사회연구소의 전통과 역할을 소장 자료를 통해서 한국기독교문화연구원의 한축을 담당했던 역사의 복원을 위한 시도라 할 수 있다.
