The ultimate aim of this study is to clearly analyze the emergence, development, and transformation of political myths under early 20th-century Western European totalitarianism and the Nazi regime from the perspective of Cassirer’s cultural politics. Cassirer identified five key political myths associated with totalitarianism and fascism: Carlyle’s “theory of hero worship,” Gobineau’s “theory of racial inequality,” Hegel’s concept of the “state,” Spengler’s “fatalistic view of history,” and Heidegger’s “existential philosophy.” This study focuses on Oswald Spengler’s “fatalistic view of history,” one of the five political myths identified by Cassirer. The aim is to elucidate the formation, characteristics, and subsequent transformation of this fatalistic view of history into a political myth from the perspective of Cassirer’s cultural politics. To this end, Section II provides a general overview of the core theses of Cassirer’s cultural politics and Spengler’s interpretation of history through fatalism. In Section III, the researcher selects and organizes key arguments from Spengler’s The Decline of the West—including his morphological interpretation of history, the comparison between herbivores and carnivores, cultural organism theory, and his treatment of causality and the concept of “fate”—from the researcher’s own perspective. In Section IV, a reading of Spengler is attempted from the standpoint of Cassirer’s cultural politics. Above all, the discussion concludes by reflecting on the influence of Spengler’s thought on modern political thought, its connections with the Nazi regime, and the significance of Cassirer’s analysis of these points. Through the above discussion, we will gain a clear understanding of how mythical thinking actually intertwines with political forces, the mechanisms by which political myths operate within the realm of political culture, and, finally, the true nature of political myth itself.

본 연구의 궁극적 목적은 20세기 초 서구 유럽의 전체주의와 나치 정권하에서 정치적 신화의 출현과 전개 그리고 변용 과정을 카시러의 문화정치학의 관점에서 명료하게 분석해 내는 데 있다. 카시러는 전체 주의와 파시즘과 관련된 대표적인 정치적 신화로 다섯 가지를 제시하였다. 칼라일의 ‘영웅숭배론’, 고비노의 ‘인종불평등론’, 헤겔의 ‘국가’ 이념, 슈펭글러의 ‘운명론적 역사관’, 하이데거의 ‘실존철학’이다. 본 연구는 카시러가 지목한 다섯 가지 정치적 신화 가운데 오스발트 슈펭글러의 ‘운명론적 역사관’에 초점을 맞추도록 한다. 그래서 카시 러 문화정치학의 관점에서 운명론적 역사관의 형성과 특징, 이후 정치 적 신화로의 변용 과정을 드러내고자 한다. 이를 위해 Ⅱ절에서는 카시러의 문화정치학의 핵심 논제에 대한 개괄적인 설명을 하도록 한다. Ⅲ절에서는 슈펭글러의 『서구의 몰락』에서 형태론적 역사 해석, 초식동물과 육식동물의 비교, 문화 유기체론, 인과법칙과 ‘운명’ 개념 에 대한 슈펭글러의 핵심 주장을 연구자의 관점에서 발췌하여 정리하 도록 한다. Ⅳ절에서는 카시러 문화정치학의 관점에서 슈펭글러 읽기 를 시도하고자 한다. 무엇보다 슈펭글러의 사상이 현대 정치사상에 끼친 영향, 그리고 나치 정권과의 관련성, 이에 대한 카시러의 분석과 그 의미를 되새겨보면서 논의를 마무리하고자 한다. 이상과 같은 논의를 통해서, 우리는 신화적 사고와 정치 세력의 결탁이 실제로 어떻게 나타나는지, 정치적 신화들이 정치 문화 영역에 서 어떤 기제 방식으로 작동하고 있는지, 마지막으로 정치적 신화의 본질이 무엇인지를 명확하게 인식하게 될 것이다.
