In Jeong Ji-yong’s essay “Renewed Expectations for Madam Jeong Hoon-mo—Ahead of the 7th Solo Concert”, a nightingale appears. The nightingale, a recurring figure in Jeong Ji-yong’s prose, symbolizes the Korean people. Its song represents the Korean people’s longing for “self-reliant independence,” “peaceful unification,” and “genuine freedom,” as they speak and act as agents of revolution. Jeong repeatedly used this word during the Japanese colonial period to express his historical and political stance. Korea remains a divided country even today. As contemporary writers revisit and speak of the intentions of their predecessors, the day may come when these hopes become reality. That would be the result of the people's prayer, yearning, and spirituality. To that end, literature should make use of media and aim for an “elevation of aura.” When literary writing and interpretation embrace multiplicity rather than singularity, they foster an “ascent of aura” that enables a more affirmative and peaceful future.
