This study aims to explore the female characters appearing in Jo Se-hee’s short and medium-length fiction. In Jo’s works from the 1970s, several women assume key roles within the narrative, demonstrating forms of agency in their respective storylines. Such characters include Young-hee, the daughter of the dwarf, Shin-ae, who is connected to the dwarf’s family, and Kyung-ae and Eun-hee, who develop interest in Yun-ho. These four women occupy significant positions within the narrative structure, particularly Young-hee and Shin-ae, who can be considered central figures responsible for shaping the world of The Dwarf. These female characters represent women living in the lower, middle, and upper classes of the 1970s. While they exhibit agency and an active sense of self, they are simultaneously bound by aspects of their past-figures whose lives remain fixed at a certain point. In his short and medium-length fiction of the 1970s, Jo Se-hee clearly delineates class boundaries. Such distinctions highlight the sharp divide between the lower class-embodied by the dwarf’s family-and the upper class. By examining the subjectivity of these female characters, this study seeks to investigate the proliferation of capital throughout the mid-to-late 1970s and the severe widening of the social and economic gap that emerged during this period.
