This study examines the representation of war orphans and vagrant children in The Orphans (『孤児たち』), Chang Hyŏkchu’s first full-length novel pub- lished after World War II. Drawing on the trajectory of Chang’s literary career, it first elucidates how he came to understand himself as a “liminal subject,” and identifies this internal self-division as the basis for his interest in war orphans and vagrant children. Furthermore, by analyzing the methodological continuity with his colonial-era work The Path of Hungry Ghosts (「餓鬼道」), this study ar- gues that Chang projected a form of“coloniality”—specifically, a subjection struc- turally analogous to that of colonial Korean peasants—onto the war orphans of post-defeat Japan. Finally, through an analysis of the characters Shintarō, Kenji, and Yōko, the paper specifically investigates how Chang’s literary self-definition, which he described as “eight parts Korean, two parts Japanese,” is reflected in the text. The analysis reveals that the ethics of the subjugated are embodied in Shintarō through the structural similarity between“lumpen” and “slave”; the instability of the colonial subject is manifested in Kenji’s stutter; and an ideal national character centered on solidarity is personified in Yōko.

본 연구는 장혁주의 전후 첫 작품인 장편소설『고아들』에 나타난 전쟁고아와 부랑아의 표상을 검토하였다. 우선 장혁주의 문학 활동 이력을 토대로 그가 ‘경계적 존재’로서의 자기 인식을 형성해온 과정을 추적하고, 이러한자기 분열이 전쟁고아와 부랑아에 주목하게 된 배경으로 작용했음을 밝혔다. 나아가 식민지 시기의 작품인「아귀도」와의 방법론적 연속성을 분석하여, 장혁주가 패전 후 일본의 전쟁고아들에게서 식민지 조선 농민과 구조적으로유사한 피지배성 즉 ‘식민지성’을 투사했음을 논증하였다. 마지막으로 작중인물인 신타로, 겐지, 요코의 형상화를 분석하여, 장혁주가 “조선 팔 할, 일본 이 할”이라 표현한 자신의 문학적 인식이 이 작품에 어떻게 투영되어있는지 구체적으로 규명하였다.
