This paper views the sex robot as a point where caregiving and sexuality in- tersect. The fact that even care robots are sexualized suggests that the boundary between “ care ” and “ sex ” is, in reality, ambiguous. The paper first reviews debates on intimate robots, noting the sharp divide between those who expect positive out- comes such as the prevention of sex crimes and those who fear negative ones such as reinforcing antisocial fantasies or devaluing women. To examine the Japanese case, the discussion focuses on the lovedoll. Unlike hyperrealistic sex robots, the lovedoll emphasizes a deliberate“dollness” (nonhuman realism) and a distinctive “narrative.” This paper explains how this narrative aligns with Monozukuri(も のづくり) Nationalism. The lovedoll is elevated from a vulgar“Dutch wife” to a symbol of Japaneseness, combining tradition represented by doll memorial rituals and craftsmanship. This mechanism legitimizes the male-centered fantasy pro- jected onto the lovedoll as a form of superior national culture. Finally, the paper argues that this fantasy fundamentally seeks a safe intimacy purified of reproduc- tion. In contrast, it explores artistic works that depict reproductive robots desiring pregnancy and birth, an imagination that may embody both a dream for the future and a melancholic reflection on the narcissistic male-centered ideal.
