Korean culture has evolved through cultural transformations driven by historical and religious influences. Korean funeral rites, too, have undergone religious and cultural changes, establishing a distinctly Korean culture. This paper examines the influence of traditional funeral rites on Korean Christian funeral rites. Christianity was founded on the foundations of traditional Korean religions, Buddhism, and Confucianism. Unlike Christianity, which modernized traditional customs and weddings, funeral rites, in the early days of Christianity's spread, were localized for missionary purposes, and were adapted as worship services. Consequently, Christian funeral rites follow the customs of traditional funeral rites. Confucianism, particularly influential during the Joseon Dynasty, prioritizes life over the present, rejecting the afterlife. Consequently, Koreans regard death as taboo and, because this life is paramount, focus on prolonging life. Conversely, Christianity, while emphasizing life on earth, also fosters hope and expectation for the afterlife, a heavenly realm, thus differing from Confucianism. Therefore, we will examine the differences and similarities between Confucian and Christian funerals, which have significantly influenced modern funeral culture, and explore a correct Christian understanding of death based on the Bible and new alternatives for Christian funerals.

한국문화는 시대적 변화와 종교적 영향에 따라 문화를 변화시키며 발전 하였다. 한국의 상장례 역시 종교적인 영향과 문화적 변화를 겪으면서 한국 적인 문화를 확립하였다. 그 결과 한국의 기독교 상장례 안에 전통 상장례가 미친 영향을 본 논문을 통해서 살펴볼 수 있다. 기독교는 한국의 전통 종교 와 불교 그리고 유교의 문화 위에 기독교의 문화가 세워졌다. 기독교가 전통 관례와 혼례를 현대화한 것과는 달리, 상장례는 기독교 전파 초기 선교목적 으로 토착화된 전통 상장례 위에 예배의 형식을 빌려 그대로 사용하였다. 그 결과 기독교의 상장례 예식은 전통 상장례 예전의 관습을 따른다. 특히 조선 시대에 영향을 준 유교 사상은 살아있는 것이 중요한 현세 중심적인 가치관 으로 내세를 인정하지 않는다. 그 결과, 한국인은 죽음을 터부시하고, 현세 가 중요하기에 생명 연장에 몰입한다. 반면, 기독교는 이 땅에서의 삶도 중 요하지만, 내세인 천국에 대한 기대와 소망을 갖는 종교로써 유교의 사상과 다르다. 따라서 현대 장례문화에 많은 영향을 미치는 유교의 상장례와 기독교 상장례의 차이점과 공통점을 살펴보고, 성경에 기반한 올바른 기독교의 죽음 이해와 기독교 장례에 대한 새로운 대안을 모색할 수 있다.
