This study examines how Africans are represented in South Korean media from 1990 to 2023, focusing on the nature and evolution of these portrayals. The analysis draws on online news articles from the BigKinds database, which compiles reports from 94 national and regional outlets. Using text mining and topic modeling (Latent Dirichlet Allocation), the study identifies dominant themes and recurring patterns in media discourse. Findings reveal that Africans are underrepresented and mostly mentioned in connection with major international events rather than within South Korea’s domestic context. When they appear, portrayals often emphasize conflict, poverty, or exoticism, reflecting an externally oriented understanding of African identities. Although some diversification has occurred since the rise of multicultural policies, stereotypical depictions persist. These results underscore the need for more inclusive and contextually grounded representations that reflect the everyday realities of African communities in South Korea.

본 연구는 1990년부터 2023년까지 한국 언론에서 아프리카인이 어떻게 재현되어 왔는지를 분석하고, 그 재현의 성격과 변화 양상을 탐구하였다. 분석 자료는 국내 94개 주요 언론사의 온 라인 기사로 구성된 BigKinds 데이터베이스에서 수집하였다. 본 연구는 텍스트 마이닝과 토픽 모델링(Latent Dirichlet Allocation, LDA) 기법을 활용하여 언론 담론 속 주요 주제와 반복되는 패턴을 도출하였다. 분석 결과, 아프리카인은 한국 사회 내부보다는 주로 국제적 사건과 연관된 맥락에서 언급되며, 전반적으로 미디어에서의 존재감이 미약한 것으로 나타났다. 또한 국내 보 도에서 아프리카인은 종종 분쟁, 빈곤, 이국성 등의 서사로 묘사되어, 아프리카 정체성에 대한 외부 중심적이고 제한된 이해를 드러냈다. 다문화 정책 확산 이후 일정 부분에서 보도의 다양화 가 이루어졌지만, 고정적이고 전형적인 재현 방식은 여전히 지속되고 있다. 이러한 결과는 한국 내 아프리카 공동체의 일상적 현실을 반영하는 보다 포괄적이고 맥락적인 미디어 재현의 필요 성을 시사한다.
