This study comprehensively explores the study abroad experiences and their characteristics among Chinese calligraphers pursuing calligraphy education in South Korean graduate schools from an educational sociological perspective. Specifically, it investigates how the admission pathways for these students into South Korean graduate schools are sociologically constructed. To elucidate this, a qualitative research approach was adopted, with eight Chinese calligraphers enrolled in a doctoral program in calligraphy education at S University in a provincial South Korean city serving as research participants. The findings revealed that Chinese calligraphers’ pursuit of graduate studies in South Korea was not merely a result of individual learning motivation. Rather, it emerged from the complex interplay and structural dynamics between two distinct social ‘fields’.

본 연구의 목적은 한국 대학의 대학원에서 서예교육을 공부하는 중국 서예가 집단의 유학 실태와 그 특징을 교육사회학적 관점에서 심층적으로 분석하는 데 있다. 이에 이 들이 한국 대학의 대학원에 진입하는 입학 경로가 어떻게 교육사회학적으로 구성되는 지에 주목하였다. 이를 규명하기 위해 한국의 한 지방도시에 위치한 S대학교 대학원에 서 서예교육 세부전공 박사과정에 재학 중인 중국인 서예가 8인을 연구대상으로 선정 하여 질적연구를 수행하였다. 연구 결과, 중국 서예가들의 한국 대학원 진학은 단순히 개인의 학습 동기에서 비롯되는 것이 아니라, 중국 학교 ‘장’ 및 한국 학교 ‘장’의 두가지 사회적 ‘장’이 복합적으로 상호작용한 구조적 역학의 산물임이 드러났다. 이는 이들 유 학생들이 경험했던 중국 서예교육의 교육 시스템과 인적 네트워크, 그리고 한국 대학 원의 입학 조건 및 서예교육의 본질적 특징이 복잡하게 얽히면서, 다층적이고도 역동 적인 유학 메커니즘을 형성했음을 의미한다. 이러한 연구결과는 한국 대학의 유학생 모집 및 관리 정책 수립에 있어 이들 유학생들을 둘러싼 문화적 및 제도적 맥락에 대한 심층적인 이해가 필요함을 시사한다.
