This study examines the development of a Korean language curriculum unit grounded in backward design to facilitate multicultural classroom instruction for learners from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Given the challenges inherent in multicultural classrooms where Korean is taught as a foreign or second language, this research seeks to gain a deeper understanding of these difficulties and explore effective pedagogical strategies. To achieve the research objectives, a review of relevant literature and case studies was conducted. Additionally, expert review was performed to enhance the validity of the research. As a result, this study delineates the development process and instructional direction of a Korean as a Second Language (KSL) curriculum unit, integrating a linguistic lens within the backward design framework. The proposed curriculum aims to enhance both productive and receptive language competencies by structuring explicit learning objectives, assessment methods, and learning experiences tailored to real-world applications. In summary, this provides insights for ensuring equitable learning opportunities and enabling in-depth understanding for learners enrolled in Korean language curriculum units, thereby supporting the implementation of multicultural education.

본 연구는 언어적, 문화적으로 다양한 배경을 가진 다문화 수업 실천을 위해 백워드 설계에 기반한 한국어 교육과정 단원 개발 연구이다. 외국어 또는 제2언어로서 한국어 교육과정을 실천하게 되는 다문화 교실에서 발생하는 어려움에 주목하여 심층적 이해 에 도달하기 위한 방안을 모색하고자 한다. 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위해 관련 문헌 분 석과 사례 연구 분석을 진행하였다. 또한 연구의 타당성을 높이고자 전문가 검토를 진 행하였다. 그리고 이를 통해 백워드 설계에 기반한 단원 개발을 위한 개념적 설계 연구 를 진행하였다. 그 결과, 언어 렌즈를 활용하여 백워드 설계를 적용한 한국어 교육과정 (KSL: Korean as a Second Language) 단원 개발 방향과 개발 과정을 제시하였다. 이 를 통해 언어 출력 능력과 이해 능력을 향상시키는 방안으로 개발되었으며 학습 목표 와 평가 방식 그리고 학습 경험을 구체적으로 구성하는 방식을 통해 실생활 기반의 교 육과정을 개발하였다. 종합해보면, 다문화 수업 실천을 위해 한국어 교육과정 단원을 수강하는 학습자들에게 공평한 학습 기회와 심층적 이해에 도달할 수 있는 시사점을 제공한다.
