This study aims to analyze the successful globalization process of Samulnori, not merely as the overseas dissemination of a traditional art form, but as a dynamic practice of cultural reconfiguration and identity formation from a diaspora perspective. After its re-creation as a modern stage art from Korean farmer’s music (Nongak), Samulnori began to spread primarily through overseas Korean diaspora communities starting in the 1980s. In this process, it underwent three main dimensions of transformation: musical reconfiguration, identity formation, and cross-cultural integration. The research methodology combined literature review (focusing on academic theses concerning the formation and globalization of Samulnori, especially the studies by Jung Jaeho and Joo Jaeyeon) with field case analysis (including Los Angeles, Romania, Germany, Colombia, Brazil, and Konkuk High School in Osaka, Japan). Specifically, diaspora theories by William Safran, James Clifford, and Stuart Hall were employed as analytical frameworks to demonstrate that tradition is a fluid practice, not a static legacy. Furthermore, the multi-layered process of identity construction was explored by examining the patterns of Samulnori participation and changes in perception across different diaspora generations (1st to 3rd generation). The research findings confirm that Samulnori functions as a medium for the preservation of identity and communal cohesion for the 1st generation within the diaspora community, while simultaneously being a ‘living tradition’ that continuously evolves into hybrid forms through encounters with subsequent generations and local cultures. It was also found that the ‘World Samulnori Competition Festival’ functioned as a transnational platform promoting the diaspora’s identity re-affirmation, cultural transmission networks, and cultural hybridity. The globalization of Samulnori is a complex cultural phenomenon successfully achieved through the combination of its musical excellence and cultural-industrial strategies with the voluntary initiatives of the diaspora. The implications of this study are as follows: Samulnori, as a convergent cultural asset that transcends the boundaries of tradition and modernity, and ethnicity and globality, offers specific strategic insights for the future direction of Korean traditional arts’ globalization. It is also suggested that Samulnori should be actively utilized as a core content for promoting multi-faceted cultural diplomacy based on traditional arts, by deepening the understanding of the diaspora community’s cultural practices. Finally, the study emphasizes Samulnori as a model with the potential for continuous recreation and expansion under diasporic conditions, suggesting the need for follow-up research on its dissemination in the digital environment and in under-analyzed regions such as Africa and the Middle East.

본 연구는 사물놀이의 성공적인 세계화 과정을 단순한 전통 예술의 해외 확산이 아 닌, 디아스포라적 관점에서 문화적 재구성과 정체성 형성의 역동적 실천으로 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 사물놀이는 한국 농악을 현대 무대 예술로 재창조한 이후, 1980년대부 터 해외 한인 디아스포라 공동체를 중심으로 확산되었으며, 이 과정에서 음악적 재구 성, 정체성 형성, 문화 간 융합이라는 세 가지 차원의 변형을 겪었다. 연구 방법으로는 문헌 연구(사물놀이 형성 및 세계화 관련 학술 논문, 특히 정재호 및 주재연의 연구를 중심으로)와 현지 사례 분석(미국 LA, 루마니아, 독일, 콜롬비아, 브라질, 일본 오사카 건국학교 등)을 병행하였다. 특히 윌리엄 사프란, 제임스 클리포드, 스튜어트 홀 등의 디아스포라 이론을 분석 틀로 활용하여, 전통이 고정된 유산이 아닌 유동적 실천임을 입증하였다. 또한 디아스포라 세대별(1세대~3세대) 사물놀이 참여 양상 및 인식 변화 를 통해 그 다층적 정체성 구성 과정을 탐색하였다. 연구 결과, 사물놀이는 디아스포라 공동체 내에서 1세대의 정체성 보존과 공동체 결속의 매개로 기능하는 동시에, 후속 세 대와 현지 문화와의 만남을 통해 혼종적 형태로 끊임없이 진화하는 ‘살아있는 전통’임 이 확인되었다. 특히 ‘세계 사물놀이겨루기 한마당’은 이러한 디아스포라의 정체성 재 확인, 문화 전승 네트워크 구축, 문화적 혼성을 촉진하는 초국가적 플랫폼으로 기능했 음이 밝혀졌다. 사물놀이의 세계화는 음악적 본질의 우수성과 문화산업적 전략이 디아 스포라의 자발적 실천과 결합하여 성공을 이룬 복합적인 문화 현상이다. 본 연구의 시사점은 다음과 같다. 사물놀이는 전통과 현대, 민족성과 세계성의 경계 를 넘나드는 융합형 문화 자산으로서, 향후 한국 전통 예술의 세계화 방향에 구체적인 전략적 통찰을 제공한다. 또한 디아스포라 공동체의 문화적 실천에 대한 이해를 심화함으로써, 전통 예술 기 반의 다각적인 문화 외교를 전개할 핵심 콘텐츠로 사물놀이를 적극 활용해야 함을 제 언한다. 끝으로, 사물놀이가 디아스포라적 조건 속에서 지속적으로 재창조되고 확장 가능성을 지닌 모델임을 강조하며, 디지털 환경 속에서의 확산 양상 및 아프리카, 중동 등 미분석 지역에 대한 후속 연구 필요성을 제시한다.
