This study explores how members of a university equestrian club experience learning and identity transformation within the framework of the Community of Practice (CoP) theory. Five student riders participated in semi-structured interviews and participant observation, and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) guided by Wenger’s (1998) model. The findings revealed five key themes: freedom and empathy with the horse, growth through interaction, a shift from individual to community-based practice, autonomous yet responsible leadership, and identity formation as “equestrians.” The study highlights that the club functions as a learning community integrating participation, reflection, and belonging, suggesting the value of CoP-based educational design and institutional support to sustain informal learning in higher education.

본 연구의 목적은 대학 승마 동아리 구성원들이 공동체 속에서 어떠한 학습경험을 통해 정체성의 변화를 형성하는지를 실천공동체 (Community of Practice) 관점에서 탐색하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 대학 승 마 동아리 학생 5명을 연구참여자로 선정하고, 반구조화된 심층면담 (semi-structured interview)과 참여관찰(participant observation)을 실시하 였다. 자료 분석은 Wenger(1998)의 실천공동체 이론을 이론적 틀로 하 고, Braun과 Clarke(2006)의 주제분석(thematic analysis) 절차를 적용하였 다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 참여자들은 ‘자유와 교감의 결합’을 통해 승마에 참여하였으며, 둘째, ‘교감을 통한 성장’을 경험하였다. 셋째, 승마를 단순한 개인 스포츠가 아닌 ‘공동체적 스포츠’로 인식하게 되었으며, 넷째, 공동체 운영은 ‘자율적 운영문화와 리더십 학습’으로 나타났다. 다섯째, 공동체는 참여자들이 ‘승마인’으로서 신체적·정서적·사회 적 영역을 통합한 정체성을 형성하는 학습의 장으로 기능하였다. 이러한 결과는 대학 승마 동아리가 학습·소속·실천이 교차하는 실천공동체적 학습 환경으로 작용하고 있음을 보여주며, 향후 실천공동체 기반 교육설 계, 안전 교육의 체계화, 대학 차원의 제도적 지원이 필요함을 시사한다.
