As one of the defining challenges of the twenty-first century, climate change has exerted a significant influence on the global human population. Debates on climate change awareness surrounding “Anthropocene Fiction” have been steadily increasing. This has facilitated the recent advent of scholarly engagement within literary works outside the English-speaking world. Therefore, this paper examines and analyzes the narrative surrounding climate change within Kōbō Abe's Inter Ice Age 4 (1959), one of the earliest Japanese literary works to incorporate the theme of climate change in the text. Written and serialized during the “International Geophysical Year” (1957–58) —a global scientific initiative that catalyzed major advances in earth sciences —Abe's novel envisions a future in which aquatic humans in undersea colonies replace terrestrial humans and become the central agents of history. The rapid environmental changes, which are depicted in the book, are not merely a narrative backdrop but also constitute a literary response to earth sciences at the time, which was deeply intertwined with Cold War military competition and resource exploitation. Inter Ice Age 4 holds particular significance as a work of “Anthropocene literature”, representing the 1950s.

기후변화는 인류가 21세기에 맞이한 중요한 과제 중 하나로 자리 잡았고, 인문학에도 큰 영향을 미쳐왔다. 또한, ‘인류세(Anthropocene)’를 둘러싼 활발한 논의를 촉발하는 계기로써 기능해왔다. 그러나 비영어권 문학연구의 자장에서 볼 때, 이른바 ‘인류세 문학 (Anthropocene literature)’에 관한 검토는 이제 막 시작되었다고 할 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 일본에서 가장 이른 시기에 기후변동을 테마로 삼은 문학작품으로 일컬어지는 아베 고보(安部公房)의 『제4 간빙기(第四間氷期)』(1959년)를 분석대상으로 삼아, 작품 세계에서 환경이라는 것이 어떠한 역할과 기능을 하고 있는지 고찰한다. 이 작품은 지구과학이 비약적인 발전을 이루는 계기가 된, 글로벌 과학 이니셔티브인 ‘국제 지구 물리 관측년(International Geophysical Year)’(1957∼1958년)에 연재가 시작되 었다. 이 작품의 설정 중 본 연구가 주목하는 것은 육지의 인간이 쇠퇴하며 바다 밑 식민지에 사는 수서인(水棲人)이 역사의 중심에 서게 되는 미래를 그린다는 부분이다. 이 같은 설정을 통해 이 작품이 그리는 급격한 환경의 변화는 단순히 소설의 배경에 그치는 것이 아니다. 냉전 하의 군비 확장, 자원개발 등과 뿌리 깊이 얽혀 있는 지구과학 에 대한 문학적 응답이라는 점에 주목해야 한다. 그러한 의미에서 『제4 간빙기』는 1950년 대 ‘인류세 문학’으로서 특히 중요한 의미를 지닌다고 할 수 있다.
