This essay analyzes the affective structure of David Walker’s Walker’s Appeal (1829) using the digital sentiment analysis tool, SentiArt. The result of this quantitative approach suggests that, contrary to the popular view of Walker’s Appeal as primarily “angry,” the affective politics of Walker exhibit a complex structure in which fear, sadness, and happiness are interwoven together. In dialogue with a qualitative reading of Walker’s Appeal, this result confirms that Walker not only evokes anger against white supremacist state violence but also compels his readers to fear the consequences of the continuation of such anti-Black injustice and invites them to envision a different, more just future. This essay also locates where digital analysis fails to fully capture the specificity of Black affect, as that of a “banished” subject within the Western white-supremacist epistemic order. By foregrounding this limitation, this essay underlines the radicalism of Walker’s affective politics and critically examines the possibilities of digital affect analysis.
