Overseas Koreans, a diaspora group, have a unique experience of engaging with political news within a dual news environments between their home country and their country of residence. This study qualitatively explored the political news consumption experiences and news literacy competencies of overseas Koreans across digital platform news environments. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 overseas Koreans residing in various regions, including the United States, Europe, and New Zealand, and inductive thematic analysis was performed, drawing on mediatization theory and the sub-elements of news literacy (access, analysis and evaluation, and participation). The results revealed algorithmic dependence, the reconstruction of political meanings, and informal, socially embedded participation. Based on these findings, the concept of “diaspora news literacy” was proposed, and educational and policy implications for transnational digital citizenship were suggested.

디아스포라 집단인 재외동포는 모국과 거주국 사이의 이중 뉴스 환경 속에서 정치 뉴스를 수용하는 독특한 경험을 지닌다. 본 연구는 디지털 플랫폼 뉴스 환경에서 재외 동포의 정치 뉴스 이용 경험과 뉴스 리터러시 역량을 질적으로 탐색하였다. 미국, 유럽, 뉴질랜드 등 다양한 지역에 거주하는 재외동포 10명을 대상으로 심층 인터뷰를 실시하 고, 미디어화 이론과 뉴스 리터러시의 하위 요소(접근, 분석·평가, 참여)를 중심으로 귀납적 주제 분석을 수행하였다. 연구 결과, 알고리즘 의존성, 정치적 의미 재구성, 사 회적 맥락 속 비공식적 참여 등이 주요 특징으로 나타났다. 이를 바탕으로 ‘디아스포라 뉴스 리터러시’ 개념을 제안하고, 초국가적 디지털 시민성을 위한 교육 및 정책 방향을 논의하였다.
