For preachers, the Book of Revelation is a challenging text to approach. It contains a mixture of literary genres, is filled with difficult-to-interpret symbols and expressions, and its narrative structure is not easily discernible. However, if Revelation is viewed simply as a "story," the easiest way to grasp its content is by understanding its structure. Once the framework is understood, the author's hidden intentions and purposes become more apparent, and the symbols within the narrative can be interpreted more naturally within the flow of the story. The main reason why Revelation’s structure has been difficult to grasp is that readers have often followed its episodes without paying attention to the purpose behind the writing. Since episodes are frequently embedded within other episodes, scholars have proposed various structural outlines, but a unified consensus has been hard to reach. However, when one focuses on the author's purpose, the book of Revelation—excluding the prologue and epilogue—can broadly be divided into two main parts. Chapters 1:9–16 form the first half, which contains a call for the suffering saints on earth to fight to the end and achieve victory. Chapters 17–22:5 form the second half, which depicts Christ as the one who conquers the false rulers of the world and reigns over all. This study focuses on chapters 2–16, the first half of Revelation, which provides particular comfort to suffering believers. By examining its structure and identifying its themes, this research aims to explore how these insights can be applied in preaching. Through this process, preachers will no longer feel the need to preach Revelation by isolating individual episodes. Instead, they will gain confidence in delivering sermons based on a comprehensive understanding of the book’s outline and purpose.

설교자에게 요한계시록은 접근하기 어려운 책이다. 이 책은 여러 장르가 혼재되어 있고, 곳곳에 해석하기 어려운 상징들과 구문들이 등장하고, 이야기의 구조는 쉽게 파악하기 어렵게 되어있 다. 게다가 해석자에 따라 본문의 시제를 다르게 이해하다보니 과거주의, 미래주의, 상징주의, 세 대주의 등으로 서로 다른 주장을 하게 된다. 그러나 요한계시록을 단순히 ‘이야기’로 바라보면 내용을 파악하기 위해 할 수 있는 가장 쉬운 방법은 구조를 이해하는 것이다. 뼈대를 이해하게 되면 자연히 그 속에 감추어졌던 저자의 의도 와 목적을 보다 쉽게 발견하게 되고, 그 흐름 속에서 상징들도 해석이 가능하게 되기 때문이다. 요한계시록의 구조를 이해하기 어려웠던 가장 큰 이유는 글 쓴 목적에 주목하지 않고 에피소드를 따라갔기 때문이다. 여러 에피소드 안에도 삽입된 또 다른 에피소드가 등장하기 때문에 학자들마 다 각자의 구조를 제시할 뿐, 통일된 의견을 도출하기는 어려웠다. 그러나 저자의 목적에 관심을 가지게 되면 요한계시록은 서언과 결어를 제외하면 크게 두 부분으로 구분할 수 있다. 1:9-16장 까지는 전반부로써 이 땅에서 고난받는 성도들에게 끝까지 싸워 승리하라는 요청이 담겨있다. 그 리고 17장-22:5까지는 세상의 거짓 통치자와 싸워 승리하며 세상을 통치하시는 그리스도를 전하 고 있다. 본 연구는 고난을 당하는 성도들에게 특별히 위로가 되는 요한계시록의 전반부인 2-16장의 구 조를 연구하고, 주제를 확인함으로써 그것을 어떻게 설교에 반영할 수 있는지를 살펴보고자 한 다. 이런 과정을 통해 설교자는 더 이상 요한계시록을 에피소드 하나씩 분리하여 설교하기보다, 전체의 개요와 목적을 이해하고 설교하는데 확신을 얻게 될 것이다.
