This study commenced with the aim of identifying the ultimate direction and purpose inherent in preaching. Preaching is the act of responding to the faith-related desires, needs, and life issues of individual believers gathered pastorally. However, preaching is ultimately a public institution of the church that transcends the personal dimension of believers. Preaching serves to enable the full realisation of believers' humanity, which is to assist them in growing into relational persons formed by God's love and the gospel of Jesus. Preaching aims to form a socio-ethically mature community by illuminating the values and vision of the gospel. The second thesis addressed in this study is to identify where the direction of such preaching meets Korea's unique “Daedong”(Great Unity) spirituality within the biblical tradition and the Western Protestant understanding of the Word and the gospel, the church, and the Holy Spirit. When Korean church preaching seeks to be a faithful practice of the socio-ethical spirituality of Daedong, its intellectual soil, Korean preaching will establish itself as a balanced practice of the Word that is more biblical, evangelical, and faithful to the doctrinal tradition of the Protestant church. This is an urgent task when viewed against the backdrop of the Korean Protestant church's preaching, which has been at the forefront of the confrontational divisions in Korean society today. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that preaching, a tradition of Western Christianity, can be understood as another form of redemptive catharsis for the Korean Protestant Church, which inherits the spirituality of Daedong. The final task of this study is to propose three ways in which preaching can activate the formation of Jesus' community. These are: that the preacher should read the text from the perspective of the community; that the text and life should be illuminated from the perspective of Jesus' redemptive narrative, with the sermon focusing more fully on that narrative; and that sermon and Eucharist should be combined, understanding the sermon as an introduction to the Eucharist and the Eucharist as an extension of the sermon's conclusion, including the Eucharist within the sermon's conclusion. Consequently, this study seeks to reaffirm the qualitative dimension of the Christian gospel—its socio-ethical dimension—as witnessed by Scripture and believed and preached by churches, by exploring the communal significance of preaching within the Korean church. It thereby proposes a direction for preaching that is more biblical, evangelical, and theological.

본 연구는 설교가 가진 궁극적 방향성과 그 목적을 확인하려는 목적에서 시작되었다. 설교는 목회적으로 회집된 신자 개인들의 신앙적 욕구와 필요, 삶의 문제들에 응답하는 일이다. 그러나 설교는 궁극적으로 신자들의 개인적 차원을 넘어서는 교회의 공적 제도다. 설교는 신자들의 인간성이 온전히 실현되도록 봉사하는 것으로, 그것은 그들이 하나님의 사랑과 예수의 복음이 형성하는 관계적 인격으로 성장하도록 돕는 일이다. 설교는 복음의 가치와 비전을 밝힘으로서 사회-윤리적으로 성숙한 공동체를 형성하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 연구가 다루는 두 번째 논제는 그러한 설교의 방향성에서 성서적 전통과 서구 개신교의 말씀과 복음, 교회와 성령의 이해가 한국의 고유한 ‘대동’(大同)의 영성과 만남을 확인하는 일이다. 레오노라 티즈데일은(Leonora Tubbs Tisdale) 설교에 대한 성찰은 설교 자가 속한 지역교회의 독특한 세계관과 가치관, 정신문화에 대한 이해와 동반되어야 함을 강조한다. 한국교회의 설교가 그것의 지적 토양인 대동의 사회-윤리적 영성에 대한 신실한 실행이고자 할 때, 한국 설교는 보다 성서적이고 복음적이며 개신교회의 교의전통에 충실 한 균형적인 말씀의 실행으로 자리하게 된다. 이는 오늘 한국사회의 대립적 분열에 앞장 선 한국 개신교회의 설교 현장에 비추어 절실한 과제다. 나아가 서구 기독교의 전통인 설교가 대동의 영성을 유산으로 가진 한국 개신교회에게 구속적 한풀이의 또 다른 연행으로 이해될 수 있음은 주목할 부분이다. 본 연구의 마지막 과제는 설교가 예수의 공동체 형성을 활성화하기 위한 세 가지 방안을 제시하는 일이다. 그것들은 설교자가 공동체의 관점으로 본문을 읽어야 할 것과 예수의 구속적 서사의 관점으로 본문과 삶을 조명하고 설교를 그 서사에 보다 충분히 집중시킬 것, 그리고 설교와 성찬을 결합하여 설교를 성찬의 도입으로, 성찬을 설교의 결말로 확장하는 이해와 성찬을 설교의 결말로 포함하는 일들이다. 결과적 으로 본 연구는 한국교회가 지닌 설교의 공동체적 의의를 탐구함으로써 성서가 증언하고 교회들이 믿고 설교해 온 기독교 복음의 질적 차원, 곧 사회-윤리적 차원을 재확인하고, 그럼으로써 보다 성서적이고 복음적이며 신학적인 설교의 방향을 제안하려 한다.
