This study investigates how Hallyu (the Korean Wave) is represented within Western media through the theoretical framework of the “cultural uncanny.” Focusing on the Netflix animation K-Pop Demon Hunters and comparing it with Star Wars and The Matrix, this paper analyzes the mechanisms of cultural appropriation and identity reconstruction. The discussion integrates Freud and Mori’s concept of the uncanny, Douglas’s boundary theory, Said’s Orientalism, Hall and Bhabha’s theories of representation, as well as Iwabuchi and Appadurai’s theories of cultural flows. The findings reveal that Western media recontextualize Hallyu within their own aesthetic and ideological frameworks, positioning Korean culture as a figure of estrangement rather than simply a popular trend. In K-Pop Demon Hunters, the fusion of idol performance and demon-hunting motifs produces a sense of categorical dissonance, intertwining fascination and discomfort. While such portrayals risk superficial readings of Korean identity, they also open a discursive space for intercultural reflection and creative reinterpretation. This study ultimately argues that examining the “cultural uncanny” in global representations of Hallyu provides insight into the challenges of maintaining Korean cultural subjectivity amid expanding transnational exchanges.

본 연구는 서구 미디어 콘텐츠 속에서 한류가 어떤 방식으로 재현되는지를 문화이론적 관점에서 탐구하였다. 특히 넷플릭스 애니메이션 <케이팝 데몬 헌터스>를 중심으로, <스타워즈>와 <매트릭스>의 사례를 비교하여 한류의 문화적 전유와 정체성 재구성 문제를 분석하였다. 연구는 프로이트와 모리의 언캐니 개념, 더글라 스의 범주 경계 이론, 사이드의 오리엔탈리즘, 홀과 바바의 재현 이론, 이와부치와 아파두라이의 문화 흐름 이론을 종합적으로 적용하였다. 분석 결과, 서구 미디어 는 한류를 일시적 유행이나 표면적 기호로 소비하기보다는 자신들의 상상과 미적 코드 속에서 재맥락화함으로써 한국 문화를 낯선 타자로 위치 짓는 경향을 보였다. <케이팝 데몬 헌터스>의 경우 아이돌과 악마 사냥이라는 혼종 서사를 통해 범주 위반적 긴장감을 형성하였으며 이는 오리엔탈리즘적 시선과 결합하여 한국 문화의 피상적 소비를 심화시켰다. 그러나 이러한 현상이 부정적 결과만을 초래하는 것은 아니며 문화 간 상호이해와 자기 성찰을 촉발하는 창조적 계기로 작용할 가능성도 존재한다. 본 연구는 한류의 글로벌 확산 과정에서 드러나는 ‘문화적 언캐니’ 현상을 비판적으로 분석함으로써 한국 문화 주체성이 직면한 인식적 과제를 규명하고자 하였다.
