This study analyzed the impact of story sources on the box office performance of films in the recent Hollywood where sequels have been actively being made in movie production. An analysis of 465 films released in the United States from 2016 to 2020 investigated that films that used film text as a story source performed better at the box office than those with original screenplays. However, the box office performance of films that use external text as a story source did not show a significant difference from the original scenario. This study revealed that factors affecting box office performance differed depending on the story source. The number of the opening screen and online frequency were found to have a significant impact on all three story sources, consistent with the analysis of all 465 films. However, expert ratings and online ratings were found to be significant in the analysis of all 465 films, but were insignificant in the analysis of all three story sources. The frequency of expert reviews was significant for the original scenario and sequel. Budget was found to be a significant variable only in the case of film text. These results indicate that factors affecting box office performance vary depending on the story source.

이 연구는 할리우드에서 속편 제작이 활발하게 이루어지는 현상에 주목하여 스토리 소스가 영화의 흥행성과에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 2016년부터 2020년까 지 미국에서 개봉된 465편의 영화를 분석한 결과 영화 텍스트를 스토리 소스로 하는 영화의 경우 오리지널 시나리오에 비해 흥행성과가 높은 반면 외부 텍스트를 활 용한 영화의 흥행성과는 오리지널 시나리오와 유의미한 차이를 보이지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구는 스토리 소스에 따라 흥행성과에 영향을 미치는 요인이 어떻 게 차별적으로 나타나는지를 조사하였다. 개봉스크린 규모와 온라인 빈도는 전체 465편을 대상으로 한 분석과 동일하게 오리지널 시나리오, 영화 텍스트, 외부 텍스 트 모두에서 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 전문가 평점과 온라인 평점은 전체 465편을 대상으로 한 분석에서는 유의미하게 나타났지만, 스토리 소스 분석에서는 모두 유의미하지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 제작비는 영화 텍스트의 경우에만 유의미하게 나타났고, 전문가 빈도는 영화 텍스트와 오리지널 시나리오의 경 우에 유의미한 변인으로 나타났다. 이러한 분석결과는 스토리 소스에 따라 영화의 흥행성과에 영향을 미치는 요인이 다르게 나타난다는 것을 의미한다.
