Between 2022 and 2025, this study systematically collected and analyzed primary and secondary sources, including festival operation reports, official websites, news coverage, and scholarly articles. On this basis, thirteen jazz festivals were selected with consideration of their scale, historical significance, representativeness, and regional distribution, encompassing major cases in North America, Europe, and Asia, as well as Korea’s Jarasum and Seoul Jazz Festivals, and their commonalities and differences were examined from multiple angles. The analysis finds that international festivals share three dimensions: securing popular appeal through genre hybridization; preserving identity by strengthening educational and participatory foundations; and pursuing sustainability via the integration of urban and tourism resources alongside environmentally conscious practices. At the same time, differences are evident in historical traditions, degrees of civic self-governance, and paths of industrialization. In the Korean context, the Jarasum Festival has evolved around jazz authenticity and the values of community and ecology, whereas the Seoul Festival has expanded its popular reach and international profile by leveraging metropolitan infrastructure and commercialization. Together, these two models constitute a dual structure that highlights the specificity of Korean jazz festivals, and the findings indicate that Korean festivals should advance toward balanced development-simultaneously strengthening authenticity and popular appeal while deepening both public value and market capacity within the global jazz-festival landscape.

본 연구는 2022년부터 2025년의 기간 동안 운영 보고서, 공식 홈페이지, 언론 보도, 학술논문 등의 자료를 수집·분석하였다. 이를 바탕으로 규모, 역사성, 대표 성, 지역적 분포를 고려해 선정한 북미·유럽·아시아의 대표 축제와 한국의 자라섬·서울 재즈 페스티벌 등 총 13개 재즈 축제를 연구 대상으로 설정하고, 이들 축제 의 공통점과 차별성을 다각도로 비교·분석하였다. 분석 결과 해외 축제들은 장르 혼종을 통한 대중성 확보, 정체성 보존과 교육·참여 기반 강화, 도시·관광 자원 결 합과 친환경 운영을 통한 지속 가능성이라는 세 가지 요인을 공유하는 동시에, 역사적 전통, 시민 자치형 운영, 산업화 모델 등에서 각기 다른 특징을 보였다. 한국 의 경우 자라섬 재즈 페스티벌은 재즈 본위의 정체성과 공동체·환경 가치를 중심으로 성장해 온 반면, 서울 재즈 페스티벌은 대도시 인프라와 산업화를 바탕으로 대중성과 국제성을 확장하였다. 이 두 모델은 한국 재즈 축제의 특수성을 보여주는 이원적 구조를 형성하고 있으며, 이러한 결과는 한국 재즈 축제가 정체성과 대 중성을 균형 있게 아우르며 공공성과 시장성을 동시에 심화하는 방향으로 발전해야 함을 시사한다.
