This study examines the role of Korean missions in contemporary society, which is characterized by diversity and multiculturalism. It focuses on the missionary work of Elisabeth Johanna Shepping, a German-American missionary. Through an examination of her life in Germany, the United States and Korea, the study explores the missionary identity and philosophy that developed within her. Building on this, it analyses the contextualization of missions and the characteristics of holistic missions as they unfolded within Korean society and culture. Shepping was fluent in both Korean and Chinese, and she overcame the various cultural and linguistic barriers of late Joseon society. She engaged directly with the lives of ordinary people from the lowest social classes, gaining an understanding of their realities and needs. She adopted children and, acting as a mother and friend, provided them with daily care and emotional support. This approach went beyond mere relief work, embodying faith and love through deep, lifelong relationships. This ministry consciously overcame the colonialist and chauvinistic mindset that was common among some missionaries to Korea at the time. It is a prime example of Elisabeth Johanna Shepping's incarnational missionary approach, which involved assimilating with the Korean people and serving them with respect for their culture and way of life. Elisabeth Johanna Shepping practised diaconal missionary work, a practice that was rarely recognised in Korean society at the time. She was particularly dedicated to educational and welfare activities targeting socially vulnerable women. As a single lay missionary, she did more than provide relief and education. By helping women to overcome social and economic hardship and become self-reliant, she enabled them to recover and take control of their lives. Furthermore, by combining Bible study and evangelism, she provided spiritual care, personal guidance and community support, leading to life transformation, growth and spiritual maturity in the gospel. She also pursued social transformation and the renewal of local communities through Christian education. By establishing the Iil School (now Hanil Theological University), she laid the foundation for sustainable community development and church growth, transcending short-term relief and education. In conclusion, Elisabeth Johanna Shepping's mission has theological implications, offering a model for contemporary, contextualised, holistic missions that transcend time and culture. It is considered an important practical model that merits re-examination in contemporary mission discourse.

본고에서 저자는 다양성과 다문화적 상황이 공존하는 현대사회 속에서 한국 선교의 본질적 방향성을 모색하기 위해서 미국 출신 독일계 선교사 서서평(Elisabeth Johanna Shepping)의 선교 사역을 중심으로 고찰하였다. 연구는 서서평의 독일, 미국, 한국에서의 생애를 살펴봄으로써 형성된 선교적 정체성과 철학을 탐구하고, 이를 토 대로 한국 사회와 문화 속에서 전개된 선교의 상황화(Contextualization)와 통전적 선 교(Holistic Mission)의 특징을 분석하였다. 서서평은 한글과 한문에 능통하여 구한말 사회의 다양한 문화적 언어적 장벽을 극복하였으며, 사회에서 가장 낮은 계층에 속한 민초들의 삶 속으로 직접 들어가 그들의 현실을 이해하고 필요를 채워주었다. 그녀는 아이들을 입양하고, 민초들의 어머니이자 친구로서 일상적 돌봄과 정서적 지지를 제 공함으로 단순한 구호 활동을 넘어 삶의 깊은 관계 속에서 신앙과 사랑을 실천하였 다. 이러한 사역은 당시 일부 내한 선교사들에게 흔히 나타나던 식민주의적 우월주의 적 사고를 의식적으로 극복한 사례로, 서서평이 한민족과 동화되어 그들의 문화와 삶 을 존중하며 섬긴 성육신적 선교의 전형적 실천으로 평가될 수 있다. 서서평은 당시 한국 사회에서 거의 인식되지 않았던 디아코니아적 선교를 실천하며, 특히 사회적 약 자였던 여성들을 대상으로 한 교육과 복지 활동에 헌신하였다. 독신 평신도 전문인선교사로서 그녀는 단순한 구호나 교육에 머물지 않고 여성들이 사회적 경제적 어려 움을 극복하고 자립할 수 있도록 지원하여 그들의 삶의 회복과 자기결정 능력 향상에 기여하였다. 아울러 서서평은 성경공부와 복음 전파를 병행하며 영적 돌봄과 개인적 지도, 공동체적 지원을 제공함으로써, 복음 안에서 삶의 변화와 성장, 신앙적 성숙을 이끌어냈다. 더 나아가 그녀는 기독교 교육을 통해 사회적 변혁과 지역 공동체의 갱 신을 추구하였으며, 이일학교(현 한일장신대학교)를 설립하여 한국 선교의 제도적 교 육적 기반을 마련함으로써, 단기적 구호와 교육을 넘어 지속 가능한 지역사회 발전과 교회 성장의 토대를 구축하였다. 결론적으로 서서평의 선교는 시대와 문화를 초월하 여 현대 상황화된 통전적 선교의 방향성을 제시하는 신학적 함의를 지니며, 오늘날 선교 담론 속에서 재조명되어야 할 중요한 실천적 모델로 평가된다.
