The 21st century can truly be called the age of technology. And Korean Protestant churches are among the organizations that have swiftly adapted to technological advancements. Most churches have brought digital devices into their sanctuaries and offer non-face-to-face online worship services. They also have created worship experiences using virtual reality and discussed the use of artificial intelligence in sermons. While demonstrating an active response to technology comparable to any other organizations, the question remains: is it truly the role of the church to introduce advancing technology into worship? Furthermore, it is questionable whether the church engages in serious reflection on technology. Beginning with these questions, this paper examines the relationship between technology and worship, and explores what form and meaning Christian worship should take in a technology-driven society. First, it considers why Korean Protestant churches have adopted an active stance towards incorporating new technologies into worship, examining the limitations of this approach from the perspective of worship history. It then illuminates the relationship between technology and worship from a cultural theological perspective. Since both technology and worship, as well as technology and Christianity, are human-made cultures, the relationship between them should not be one-sided utility but rather a cultural transformation achieved through deep discussion. Therefore, for this relationship to be well-established, an understanding of technology must come first. To this end, this paper explores the theories of philosophers of technology. According to them, technology is not a neutral tool; it possesses the power to either benefit society or dominate it, depending on human choices and decisions. Thus, the church should utilize technology not to introduce it into worship from a pragmatic perspective, but to preserve the essence of worship. In this vein, this paper redefines the relationship between technology and worship. It argues that since the essence of Christian worship presupposes communication—God's revelation and humanity's response—the existence of technological media is indispensable. Furthermore, it emphasizes that the purpose and object of worship are both God and humanity, not merely the participants, and proposes practical ways to effectively express this. It leads to the claim that examining how technology has been utilized in Christian worship throughout history can establish criteria for selecting and determining appropriate technologies. Through this, this paper proposes a direction for worship in Korean Protestant churches within a technological society.

21세기는 가히 테크놀로지, 즉 기술의 시대라 해도 과언이 아니다. 그리고 한국 개신교 교회는 기술의 발전에 따라 발 빠른 변화를 취한 단체 중 하나이다. 대부분의 교 회는 디지털 기기를 예배당 안으로 들여 놓았고, 비대면 온라인 예배 서비스를 제공 하고 있다. 가상현실을 이용한 예배를 만드는가 하면, 인공지능을 사용한 설교에 대한 논의도 이어가고 있다. 기술에 대한 반응이라는 면에서는 여느 단체 못지않은 적극적 인 모습을 보이고 있지만, 과연 발전하는 테크놀로지를 예배에 도입하는 것이 교회의 역할인가 하는 질문이 남는다. 더불어 교회는 기술에 대한 진지한 성찰을 하고 있는 지도 의문이다. 본 논문은 이러한 질문에서 시작해 기술과 예배의 관계를 살펴보고, 기술이 주도하는 사회에서 기독교의 예배는 어떠한 형태와 의미를 가져야 하는지를 모색한다. 먼저 한국 개신교 교회가 새로운 기술을 예배에 도입하는 것에 적극적인 태도를 보이게 된 이유를 예배 역사의 관점에서 살펴보고 그러한 태도의 한계를 지적 한다. 이어서 기술과 예배의 관계를 문화 신학적 관점에서 조명한다. 기술과 예배, 기 술과 기독교는 모두 인간이 만들어낸 문화인 바, 둘 간의 관계는 일방적인 유용이 아닌 심도 있는 논의 끝에 이루어지는 문화적 변용이어야 한다. 따라서 이 관계가 잘 이루어지기 위해서는 기술에 대한 이해가 우선되어야 한다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 기 술 철학자들의 이론을 탐구한다. 그들에 따르면, 기술은 중립적인 도구가 아니며, 인 간의 선택과 결정에 따라 사회를 이롭게 할 수도, 사회를 지배할 수도 있는 힘이 있 다. 그렇기에 교회는 실용주의적 관점에서 기술을 예배에 도입하는 것이 아니라 예배 의 본질을 보전하는 방향으로 기술을 활용해야 한다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 논문은 기 술과 예배의 관계를 재정의한다. 특히 기독교 예배의 본질이 하나님의 계시와 인간의 응답이라는 소통을 전제하므로 기술을 활용한 매개체의 존재는 필수불가결하다는 논 지를 내세운다. 더불어 예배의 목적과 대상이 참여자가 아닌 하나님과 인간 모두임을 강조하고, 이를 잘 드러낼 수 있는 실천적 방안을 제시한다. 이는 역사 속의 기독교 예배에 기술이 어떻게 활용되었는지를 살펴봄으로써 기술의 선택과 결정의 기준을 마련할 수 있다는 주장으로 이어진다. 이를 통해 본 논문은 기술 사회 속 한국 개신교 교회 예배의 방향성을 제안한다.
