Abraham Kuyper explains that common grace allows human beings to live creatively within God’s created order. However, when a person fails to achieve normal emotional development during early childhood, the true self becomes repressed, making a creative life difficult. Such individuals live trapped within an isolated inner world without knowing the reason or cause. Their inner life often feels empty and powerless, and they find it difficult to experience joy or a sense of accomplishment that comes from the world’s rewards. In psychology, people with these characteristics are described as having borderline or schizoid personality traits. William A. Barry notes that such individuals struggle with similar patterns in their spiritual life. They long for God to heal their inner wounds, yet they often find little help within the existing structure of the church community. William James argued that a radical conversion experience can bring personality transformation and a reorientation of one’s values for such people. Walter E. Conn, from an integrative perspective of psychology and theology, emphasized that conversion is not merely an emotional experience but an essential transformation of the self—cognitively, morally, and spiritually. Conn regarded the emergence and growth of the true self as central to conversion. He understood conversion not simply as a religious change but as an ontological transformation: the birth and maturation of the true self toward self-transcendent integration. He also viewed this transformation as arising from conscience, the self-transcending desire of the true self. This study explores the meaning of Christian conversion through the case of Jeanne Guyon. Jeanne Guyon, who showed symptoms of borderline personality, underwent two radical conversions that transformed her personality and enabled her to live a self-transcendent life. Based on Conn’s theoretical framework, this study analyzes Jeanne Guyon’s conversion experiences to show that her radical experiences were not pathological but rather a normal and meaningful form of Christian conversion. Furthermore, it aims to propose an integrative perspective for understanding and guiding radical conversions among people with borderline personality traits in the context of spiritual direction and pastoral care.
