John Wesley, a main figure in the renewal and revival of the 18th-century English Church, painstakingly selected 44 standard sermons to help Methodist preachers proclaim the true Christian faith. Of these, 13 standard sermons were on the Sermon on the Mount, a relatively large portion because Wesley valued the Sermon on the Mount as the core of Christian faith and he desired its widespread dissemination. The purpose of this paper is to study the Religion of the Heart as revealed in John Wesley's the Sermon on the Mount. The religion of the heart is the essence of true Christianity and an inner religion that changes and grows according to the Image of God. In the Sermon on the Mount, Wesley presented the path to heaven, beginning with poverty of heart for the religion of the heart and progressing through The Eight Blessing to perfect holiness. From this, he invited us to true holiness and true happiness. True holiness is understood as an internal holiness that defines what a Christian should be like, an external holiness that defines what a Christian who has achieved internal holiness should do, and a practical life of love for God and neighbor by achieving social holiness through both internal and external holiness. Salvation, prayer, and fasting were the means of grace leading to holiness, and in this process purity of intention was crucial. By emphasizing the purity of intent in the religious and daily lives of Christians, it was made true Christian behavior. We also learned that the task of soul care which revealed in the Christian process of holiness can be accomplished more smoothly through the elements of pastoral counseling of listening, immediacy, respect, holiness, empathy, genuineness, relationship, and happiness. Wesley was wary of the internal and external obstacles that hindered the holy heart and the holy life. Through this, Wesley hoped that Christianity would break away from being a formal and external religion through the soul care of pastoral counseling and become a religion of the heart, an internal religion that begins from the heart and leads to holiness. Wesley, who saw holiness and happiness as the same, pursued holiness and happiness all his life. In this age of demanding holiness for churches and believers, we hope to achieve both a holy heart and a holy life through continuous change and growth toward a Religion of the Heart, thereby embodying true Christianity, loving and serving God and neighbor, and achieving salvation of the soul and true happiness.

18세기 영국 교회의 갱신과 부흥의 주역이었던 존 웨슬리는 메소디스트 설교자들의 참된 기독교 신앙 선포를 위해 44편의 표준설교를 심혈을 기울여 선정했다. 이 중 13 편이 산상수훈에 대한 설교로 비교적 큰 비중을 차지했는데, 이것은 웨슬리가 산상수 훈을 기독교 신앙의 핵심으로 중시하고 널리 전파하길 원했기 때문이다. 본 논문의 목적은 존 웨슬리의 산상수훈 설교에 나타나 있는 마음의 종교를 연구함에 있다. 마 음의 종교는 내적 종교로 하나님의 형상을 따라 변화하고 성장하는 참된 기독교의 본 질이다. 산상수훈 설교에서 웨슬리는 마음의 종교를 위하여 가난한 마음으로 출발하 여 팔복의 순서대로 그리스도인의 완전 성결에 이르는 천국의 길을 제시하였으며, 이 로부터 참된 성결과 참된 행복으로 초대하였다. 참된 성결은 그리스도인이 어떠한 사 람이 되어야 하는지에 대한 내적 성결, 내적 성결을 이룬 그리스도인은 무엇을 해야 하는지에 대한 외적 성결, 그리고 내적 성결과 외적 성결을 통하여 사회적 성결을 이 룸으로써 하나님과 이웃을 사랑하는 실천적 삶임을 알 수 있었다. 구제, 기도, 그리고 금식은 성결에 이르는 은총의 수단이었으며, 이 과정에서 중요한 것이 의도의 순수성 이었다. 그리스도인의 종교 생활과 일상 생활에서 의도의 순수성을 강조함으로써 참 된 기독교적 행동이 되도록 했다. 그리스도인의 성결 과정에서 드러나는 영혼 돌봄의 과제는 경청, 즉시성, 존중, 성결, 공감, 진정성, 관계성, 그리고 행복의 목회상담적 요 소를 통하여 보다 원활하게 이루어질 수 있음을 또한 살펴볼 수 있었다. 웨슬리는 성 결한 마음과 성결한 삶을 방해하는 내적·외적 장애물들을 경계했다. 이러한 과정에서 영혼 돌봄의 목회상담을 통하여 기독교가 형식적이고 외적인 종교에서 탈피하여, 마 음에서 시작하여 성결함에 이르는 내적 종교인 마음의 종교가 되기를 염원했다. 성결 과 행복을 동일하게 본 웨슬리는 일평생 성결과 행복을 추구했다. 교회와 신자들의 거룩함을 요구하는 현시대에 마음의 종교를 향한 지속적인 변화와 성장으로 성결한 마음과 성결한 삶을 동시에 이룸으로써, 하나님과 이웃을 사랑하고 섬기는 참된 기독 교를 구현하며, 영혼의 구원과 참된 행복에 이르기를 기대해 본다.
